My husband and I have a fairly large collection of board games that we play with in our leisure time. Many of these games have an economic element that teach you to think carefully about how to invest your resources and best your opponent. If there's one fundamental rule for financial success, it's "spend less than you earn." That rule applies whether you have a job or not. But, if you're used to having a job, the adjustments to getting by without one are going to be huge. It can be done, though. I suggest a three-pronged strategy, the first prong being to boost your income.

I haven't had a television in years. It's not because I'm so busy mountain-climbing or saving the world. It's not because I'm really good at saving money, either. It's mostly because I just don't need it that badly, even though I sometimes really want it.

Hobbies generally end up in the expense category. Depending on the hobby, you may be paying for equipment, supplies, books and magazines, classes, training--the list goes on. Short of turning your hobby into a business, is there any way to get your hobby to pay its own way? Very possibly.

I like Sarah's post about fun ways to make money, and I thought I'd add to that list. These are more "turn your hobbies into a job" type posts, and I don't suppose that they are all viable for everyone, but with a little creativity, they can be parlayed into part-time gigs.
