• Six Boneless Dishes for the Hot Wing Crowd   15 years 41 weeks ago

I make buffalo chicken salads a little differently. I marinate bite-sized boneless, skinless chicken pieces in a mixture of Smart Balance (or butter) and Frank's, then saute the whole mess. It will be a little saucy, but that warm sauce also wilts the spinach just slightly--in the same way a warm spinach-bacon salad is a little wilted. If you really like your wings hot, add some cayenne to the marinade, mix more hot sauce in with your dressing, or both.

I also add shredded carrots to my buffalo salads.

• 5 Free Wesabe Alternatives | Goodbye Wesabe   15 years 41 weeks ago

I too am sad to see Wesabe go, I'm surprised we didn't see advertising, Freemium or subscription money making models before their announcement to close.

My basic Criteria for a Wesabe alternative:

Cost:
The price should be somewhere between free and $20/year max.

Privacy:
Doesn't ask for my bank passwords, Chase actually charges 10$/mo if I do. I usually upload the microsoft money exports from each of my banks, the wesabe firefox downloader made this very easy.

• Ask the Readers: What Makes You a Cheapskate?   15 years 41 weeks ago

I go onto every website out there to enter any contest, get any freebie, or coupon. I havent bought shampoo or conditioner in months. I only use the free samples that come in the mail. I will save a buck where I can and when I can. I will only buy meat when it goes onsale for less then 1.99 per pound and I swap generic items where I can without my family noticing.

• The cost of a free ride - why not to use a buyer's agent   15 years 41 weeks ago

It is interesting how your story calls the agent a crock whos only interest is his own pocket, and yet you are willing to believe him. Do you realize that you call him unethical in the very story you tell. If he was ethical his interest would be working for that seller and if there are two offers on the table your first offer or an increase of 2k should not have been accepted. I choose to work with those who always choose the high road, be it my doctor, lawyer, cpa, or real estate agent. I call it karma.

• Passport Pictures for Under a Dollar   15 years 41 weeks ago

Unfortunately, this did not work for CVS in Wood-ridge NJ. I made a 4x6 image at home using the computer to contain 6 pictures. CVS decided that since the content of the photo resembles passport photos, I have to pay $9 per image instead of $0.29. I walked away. My photos are not even for U.S. passport and it has different dimensional requirements.

• Ask the Readers: What Makes You a Cheapskate?   15 years 41 weeks ago

I don't really think of myself as a cheapskate. I LIKE stretching my grocery budget, going to thrift stores and yard sales as well as coming up with inexpensive ways to entertain our family of six.

• Selling Your Groupon Coupons   15 years 41 weeks ago

Thank you for the article WiseBread! I'm Kris, the founder of DealsGoRound. In the five plus months we've been running the website, we haven't heard of a single problem with fraud; however, we certainly aren't discounting that risk. As the deal providers and merchants get better at tracking the deals, I hope to be able to leverage that capability, as well. We do have a couple projects in development as I write this to help where we can.

I can tell you that people are definitely benefiting from DealsGoRound in the cities where we are starting to build a following. I actually get "thank you" emails once in a while which is nice :). Right now, we are doing our best to spread the word and get as many eyeballs on the website as possible. The more people we can get on the website, the better chance people like Leslie have of unloading their deals.

• 5 Reasons Not to Apply for a Loan Modification in the Home Affordable Modification Program (HAMP)   15 years 41 weeks ago

I, too, am in dire straits with Wells Fargo. We had a new company take over at work. The resulting changes caused a drop in our income of $1500 per month! needless to say we could not keep up with our $2500 mtg. (2,000 first & 500 second) We went through 2 HUD counselors and much more hassle until Wells Fargo granted us a 3 month trial period of $1500/mo on the first mtg. WF sold the 2nd mtg to NationStar - who has been wonderful to help the situation by lowering our payment and interest. We did those 3 months for WF fine, but then when they sent notification of the set amount it was back up to $2000! Oh my God! We are again behind 2 months because we just can't afford it, which WF knows! We are waiting to hear back from WF after we called to ask how this was supposed to help us....I want to cry when I think how greedy the banks are. They really don't care about real people trying to have a home.

• Household Cleaning Hacks That Save You Money   15 years 41 weeks ago

We clean surfaces with a spray of H2O2 and then a spray of vinegar. This has the advantage of killing all the germs while being a cheap and easy way to clean.

We get the windows with vinegar and old newspapers something about the ink and the acid makes the windows super clean and shiny.

A mild drain clog can often be cleared with baking soda and vinegar

Baking soda is also great to get stains off of the stove if you haven't cleaned it in a while.

I also give wood cutting boards a good scour down with salt and vinegar about once a month. It does make them smell like pickles but it can save a beat up old cutting board.

The first thing we did was to start to recycle. Once we started recycling just our plastic and paper, it was shocking to see how little actual garbage we created. And we haven't even done anything as far as compost goes.

I think this might be a great place to start because it doesn't cost a dime to do.

• Ask the Readers: What Makes You a Cheapskate?   15 years 41 weeks ago

I am driving a 12 year old year jeep that is getting very ghetto. It has a duct tape bumper (at least it is black duct tape to match). A duct tape window on the driver's side to hold it up because otherwise the motor to fix the window would cost $400.00. The glove box doesn't close and the air conditioner doesn't work but I always say, "Hey I am driving it for free."

• Reclaiming Etiquette: Dining Basics for New Professionals   15 years 41 weeks ago

Regarding the position of Utensils on the plate.

At least in Central Europe, a V shaped placed set of utensils is used to to indicate that one has not yet finished. Whereas a if you put the utensils together in the right corner, a well-educated waiters knows, that he can take the plate.

mind the cultural differences, if you move out of your context.
Having said that, thanks for the article

• Ask the Readers: What Makes You a Cheapskate?   15 years 41 weeks ago

My husband and I are cheapskates for sure. but we also love learning new skills from reading / watching you tube etc. and applying them to our home projects.
1. no cable
2. cook at home, we both pack our lunch daily.
3. make "organic baby food" using a manual grinder on the same veggies and fruits that we adults eat.
4. eat fruits from our trees - apple, orange, apricot, peach and lemons.
5. we laid 3/4" hardwood flooring ourselves, around 1000+ sqft
6. We tiled our fireplace ourselves (renting some tools for cutting etc.)
7. Husband installed recessed lights by learning it all from Youtube
8. He also fixed some car faults (electricals for turn lights, window switches, brake pads. He did this by reading about car circuits from car manuals found in the library.
9. we do our own cleaning, landscaping, yard work etc.
10. we buy all kid gear 2nd hand on craigslist. Well, much of adult stuff as well - bedroom furniture, tools, cars.
11. we installed the drip irrigation ourselves, and also fixed a few sprinklers / pipe leaks.

• How 16 Great Companies Picked Their Unique Names   15 years 41 weeks ago

"They finally settled on hotmail because it had the letters "html," referencing the HTML programming language used to help create the product."

HTML is not a programming language; it's a markup language. And I guarantee it wasn't *the* language used to create Hotmail because that would be impossible. (HTML just does not have those capabilities, nor is it meant to.) I know you're just paraphrasing the WP article, and what I'm saying might sound like split hairs or irrelevant technobabble, but it does put a different spin on the story. Why name Hotmail after HTML instead of CGI, Perl or whichever backend language was REALLY doing the heavy lifting? My guess is because HTML is and was more easily-recognizable, to the point where many people consider(ed) it synonymous with the web. There's a huge difference between naming your product after an arbitrary internal component (usually just confusing or meaningless from your user's POV), and naming it after something that will create a positive and meaningful mental connection. My $0.02.

I switched a lot of bulbs to CFLs, including my outside lighting. Also, the outside lighting needed updating, so I switched to motion-detector lights, which means I can have lighting when needed (like when I arrive home after dark), but I don't need to leave them on all the time.

Along with turning the AC temp up in summer and the heat down in winter, I lowered the temp on my water heater.

Also examining the things I buy out of habit, and whether I really need them helps too. Fabric softner and ziploc bags are just two of the things I no longer buy or miss.
