I love Gnucash! And as far as I know, it works with any currency. I may be part of the computerized generation, but it's a really great tool once you get used to it.
I'd also like to recommend "Whole Foods 365" line of products. I make a special trip to Whole Foods just to stock up on their bath products - each 32oz bottle of shampoo/ conditioner/ shower gel/ moisturiser is priced at $4.99!
Per ounce, that's cheaper than some drugstore brands, and smells better too!
(Available in Lavender, Grapefruit, Mint or Unscented. I recommend the Lavender - not overpowering and it has a hint of ginger in it...mmm...)
No matter how stressful your finances can be, it is important to forget them for just a little bit. For your family or for your friends, you should forget it for just a bit. It is not worth bringing troubles to the rest of your family as that will only make matters worse. Instead, maybe give them a hug!
iam a renter and thepeoplethat we rent the home i am living in and it has is beeing forclosured on august11,2010.we signed aleasefor one year do we stillhave to move?do weget our depositback ?what can we do about this
Don't know if someone commented on this elsewhere but I don't have cable or a phone line either. I live in a metropolitan area and have access to two companies that allow you to access wireless services for a small fee.
So if you have a computer with wireless capabilities you can access wireless in your house without setting a router and wireless transmitter
The companies are CLEAR and Airimba, CLEAR runs about twenty five bucks and Airimba is 34 for a single use computer.
Check out if you live in a big city, if your in a rural area these might not be an option, but something to think about
This has always intrigued me too. It's as if there's such a 'group think' going on that folks fall prey to the collective (elevated and sometimes ridiculous) expectations. It will interesting to see if the lessons we're learning from the recession will be permanent ones.
Oi have many dvd players connected to my bigscreen in my living room. I have a region free player as well but I don't want to spend more money for another one for my bedroom. I recently purchased a magnavox blu ray player NB500MGX and I would like to give my Chinese region free player a chance to just play in my bedroom. I was wondering if your codes work on blu ray players as well? If you can help me I'd sure appreciate it
Asked around until I obtained a free rain barrel to collect all the rain we get in South Louisiana which I use to water the vegetable garden and flowers as well as bath the dogs in an outside tub that we picked up on freecycle. Still trying to find a free shower fixture for our outside shower made from free pallets which we will use on those hot summer days instead of using hot water heated by water heater inside. Boycot seafood since the oil spill, prices have doubled, we are taking advantage of summer specials on hotdogs and chicken especially with after 4th of July sales. Besides the usual, coupons, internet searches on new ways to save money, library books on thrift and savings just trying to stay one step ahead of inflation and the recession.
The single best piece of advice I've heard is NEVER be afraid to walk out. Even if your two hours in and several "talks with the manager" and "this is the best offer I can do" don't for a moment feel obligated to continue. Even if you get to finance (been a while but I don't think you sign anything till the very end) and they start to nickel and dime you don't hesitate to stick to your guns and say if they keep trying to force stuff that you will walk out. There is only one of you and you are the only one with your specific needs. There are plenty of dealers out there. If you don't like what one does you can go to the next.
You slightly touched on it, but look into the "factory recertified" cars. They're used but they're at a reduced price, checked out by dealerships and still come with some sort of warranty. May be harder to find prices other people paid because it varies wildly on things like how many miles are on it. But another option to save some money.
not a bad article, if a bit basic. a good starting point is always a place like truecar.com (but there are several... ), which will give you a range of actual sales prices in your local area for the car of your choice.
however, the best piece of advice i EVER got was from my uncle -- an ooolllld chrysler-vp (pre-iacocca), it went something like this, add NY-italian-accent for effect.
NO DEALER WILL EVER SELL YOU A CAR AND "LOSE MONEY".
THEY ARE NOT YOUR FRIENDS, THEY ARE TRYING TO MAKE A LIVING TO FEED THEIR FAMILIES AND BUY NICE THINGS -- ALL BY GETTING YOU TO SPEND YOUR MONEY.
THEY DESERVE TO MAKE A LIVING; BUT SO DO YOU.
THAT EXTRA $100 FEE AT THE END OF NEGOTIATIONS IS GRAVY FOR THEM. WOULDN'T YOU SPEND AN EXTRA 60 SECONDS TELLING SOMEBODY -- OOPS, FORGOT THIS ITEM .. BUT ITS ONLY $100.
A SWEETER BENJAMIN THERE NEVER WAS.
IT IS YOUR MONEY. YOU CAN WALK AWAY ANY TIME YOU WANT TO.
NO DEAL WILL EVER "DISAPPEAR".
IT WILL BE THERE TOMORROW -- THE DAY AFTER -- OR AT ANOTHER DEALERSHIP.
A GOOD DEAL IS ONE WHERE EVERYONE IS HAPPY AND SATISFIED.
HERE'S THE CATCH.
THE DEALER WILL ALWAYS BE HAPPY (BECAUSE HE/SHE WON'T SELL UNTIL CERTAIN CONDITIONS ARE MET).
THE QUESTION IS; WHAT WILL MAKE YOU HAPPY? DECIDE BEFORE YOU WALK IN; AND DON'T WALK OUT WITHOUT STICKING TO YOUR GUNS.
Costco has a great new car buying program for members. They do all the work and you end up paying the dealer invoice price plus $500-$750 (and most of the time you are still eligible for dealer incentives). Over the years, my family (two of whom are accountants) have bought five cars this way.
These are great cautionary tips about credit scores. I think the biggest issue with people managing their credit scores is simply not understanding what makes it up. Robin Holland, a blogger for Equifax, explains the "credit score recipe" really simply: http://credit.equifax.com/2010/06/debt-reduction-why-paying-down-your.html
For what it's worth, if you happen to own a flashlight that takes 5 D cell batteries, and you tape TWO of the four you found in your 6 volt lantern battery so they fit close to the diameter of an actual D cell, putting one in first and the other in last, these longish four will fit the same length as the five did ! I paid $2.38 for one 6 volt that gave me these batteries for my Kel-light security flashlight.
i have never ever gone shopping for a car and this is one of those things that i will put off for as long as i can. I cannot even drive. Means that first i have to learn then save enough to buy some wheels and then get shopping. Just the thought of that gets makes my head spin. Then i am reading things about carbon taxes to drivers, increased fuel prices, road maintenance charges, drivers having to pay for every mile they drive etc etc. All this makes me to want to stick to the bus and hire a car when it is absolutely necessary
Hey its really great ideas and I am searching for this ideas for more than 2 months. And atlast I got more than enough from this post. And may I know while tracking the response, whether it will create any problem for me from the bank?

This is a timely post for me, as I just started researching cars. After 7.5 years and 148,500 miles on my current car, it's time to get rid of her. Ironically, I spent about 2 hours on Edmunds.com yesterday doing some initial research. I think Edmunds has value, but I can see your point about the "true" lowest price they detail. As soon as I figure out the car I want, I will definitely go check out some forums. Now that I think about it, I consult forums while making other buy decisions, so why not for a car?
Thanks a lot for the insight. If any other commenters have suggestions on new or used car research, please share!
It worked perfectly for us. We got exactly the price (including dealer fees, taxes, etc.) we wanted for exactly the car we wanted and only went to dealers to test drive.
I agree with your point on being cautious. I feel you have to be very careful when you are investing, it better to know every thing in detail and, clarify all your doubts before making any investments. Similarly even on roads, one has to be very cautious.
GnuCash sucks for somebody who just needs to keep track of a checkbook, and is much closer to a business bookkeeping program like Peachtree or something. There are better, much more user-friendly alternatives out there for people who basically just need to balance their checkbooks using the PC.

You've already lost money with a new car. Go buy used and save a ton of money.
