  • Travel and Money: Using Your Credit Card on the Road   16 years 1 week ago

Traveler's checks were once the most popular method used for spending money when traveling overseas. Today many travelers tend to use credit cards which can be the safest and most effective way of carrying currency. Credit card purchases are exchanged at the interbank exchange rate which is typically the best rate available for currency exchange. Before you travel abroad it is a good idea to call your credit card issuer and inquire about fees which may apply to your purchases while traveling. You should also let your credit card issuer know where and when you will be traveling. This is important so the international activity on your credit card will not alert the card issuer's fraud system.

If you are considering using a debit card or ATM card keep in mind credit cards have security measures making them much safer to use. Most credit cards come with an insurance policy which will cover loss or theft of your card. Paying with credit cards gives you the advantage of purchase protection. Pick a credit card to travel with which is accepted in most countries. Visa and MasterCard are both widely accepted.

Before traveling compare your credit card issuer's fees which will be charged for overseas purchases. Decide which of your credit cards will be best to use abroad. If you are searching for a new credit card with better rates and lower fees please visit http://www.cardtohave.com . You will find a wonderful selection of credit card offers available to suit individual needs.

  • How to Agree without Compromise   16 years 1 week ago

This is a tough one all-around, not just the where-to-live debate but the working/resentment added in -- something that I don't think a blog post could handle but perhaps a counselor or non-biased friends who can see the full situation.

  • How to Agree without Compromise   16 years 1 week ago

Gaah. Living the "where to live" debate now. I have a compromise position, he does not. Also, I have built up resentment about being made the family (just the 2 of us) breadwinner 8 years ago when he lost his job - and he hasn't worked since. I am a loving and supportive spouse, but how long do I be loving and supportive without living where I want to live (BTW, I have a completely portable and good job I can take with me to continue to support us)?

    Philip,

You really hit home with this one. A year after my wife and I got marrried, my career stalled out. Luckily we had leveraged our great income (double income no kids) and were able to move to an area we love, purchase our first home (priced on the lower end of what we could afford), and I was able to open my own business. Thank you for reminding me why frugality is so important

  • Can Men Be Trained To Understand Women?   16 years 1 week ago

I think what men need to do to understand women better is to share as many of their experiences as possible.Compulsory female role service would not be a bad idea.It would be a bit like national service they had to do, but instead of being soldiers for a year, they would live as females. If they decide they like it and continue in that role they would have the option of doing so.If they don't like it, atleast they know for one year what it's liketo be a woman to some degree. They could get some idea of what it's like to be pregnant through wearing the extra weight at the front-what's it called?
Any way ladies I'dlove to know what you think of this idea-I've never heard any one suggest it yet!

  • Turn Off Your Air Conditioning   16 years 1 week ago

But that's kind of my point: Austin used to be tolerable (we know this because people used to live there). If it isn't tolerable now, the question ought to be, "Why not?"

You mentioned one reason: a lack of appropriate buildings. I don't doubt that most buildings built in Austin in the past 60 years are wretched without air conditioning. To me, though, that just means, "Don't live in those buildings." If you want to own a house, buy one that was built before air conditioning (or one built after, but along the same lines as old buildings).

You don't list any other reasons, but I expect they're the same. I bet people in Austin used to do their heavy work in the early morning and the evening, but you can't now because employers won't stand for it. I bet people in Austin used to take siestas, but employers won't allow that either. It used to be possible to dress for the heat but now that so many buildings are excessively air conditioned, there's no way to dress that's appropriate for whatever conditions you're likely to face. And so on.

You don't need air conditioning. We know that because people got along without it from the dawn of humanity until just a few decades ago. What has changed that makes air conditioning essential now? (Note that there are places in the desert Southwest that were uninhabited before the invention of air conditioning, except for passing nomads. Those places, I'll grant, are uninhabitable without air conditioning.)

  • Generic Drug Price Lists For Six Major Pharmacies - Updated   16 years 1 week ago

I've always wondered about the signs that advertise a pharmacy's price for generics - what happens if your insurance copay is more than what they charge? Do you know what happens if the pharmacy charges $4 for a 30-day supply of generics, but an insurance company has you pay $10 for the same thing - do you have to pay the copay or will the pharmacy charge you their lower fee?

  • 5 Steps Toward Financial Independence   16 years 1 week ago

    1. The title of the article is 5 Steps Toward Financial Independence. It's hard to be financially independent if you're still in debt and have little or no savings! If you don't start somewhere (get a job, know your expenses/debts) you'll never get anywhere else (enough money to comfortably live without a job.)

    2. I take anything I find on Wikipedia (no matter how well written, researched, or thought out it seems to be) with some skepticism. The actual quote from the source the Wikipedia article is citing says that "financial independence means the ability to manage your money in such a way that you have sufficient funds to live your chosen lifestyle without assistance from others." Up to and including being able to not need a job.

    3. I think this is a great article to help remind all of us who aren't financially independent yet how to stay on track towards the goals we have. Most people want to be able to live without having to work someday. But many of us fall off the wagon (so to speak) somewhere down the road and occasionally need a little push or reminder of where to start again.

  • Turn Off Your Air Conditioning   16 years 1 week ago

I live in Austin, TX which has definitely been inhabited for several centuries and I dare you to go without AC when it's 105 degrees! If you're single, can move around the country, and live in "appropriate buildings", then your post would work. When you have a family, own a house and live in parts of the country where you have never been, your rule does not work. I imagine it's the same for Arizona, New Mexico and other extremely hot places.

Regardless, good post for certain places like Cali or the Mid-West I suppose!

  • How to Make Moonshine   16 years 1 week ago

    Guest,
You can use charred wood to age and flavour pure alcohol. It will give it character and notes that you would want. You can even use completely stripped alcohol. It will add to what you already have. If you have some carried over flavour, it adds to that. It is not needed to age if you are ADDING the flavours from a kit. They have the "aged" flavour already in there.

  • You're Going to Get a Traffic Ticket Soon   16 years 1 week ago

Doing the speed limit in town is easy and almost a no brainer. You're almost always stoping and or slowing down. So flooring it as soon as the light turns green only to stop at the night one not only makes the person like like a dumbass but also someone who does not car about how much gas cost (because they're wasting a lot). I went down a street I live, did the speed limit and just coasted when the light turned red and never had to actually use my brakes the whole way (and this happens often). While the people who keep racing to be the first ones to stop kept looking at me. But I do have a speeding problem on the freeway and will admit it. It bugs the piss out of me how slow it is on most freeways. 55? Really? The highest speed limit I've seen is 70 on a few freeways in some areas and they are: the 15 and 60 in CA. This whole speeding on the freeway is becoming bullshit because I will do the speed limit \, let's say 65 and be in the slow lane (not truck lane) and get passed by EVERYONE, even big rigs! I got pulled over one time because of it. Though I did something and that is why I was driving so slow and told him "I'm driving slow because the speed lmit is 65, if they raised it I would go faster." Then tells me to basicly remember to keep up with the flow of traffic it's safer. So what the Hell?! Keep up with them? And the majorty of them go 80-90 on adverage, then do that, get pulled over for speeding and tell the cop "Oh no it's okay, another cop told me to keep up with the flow of traffic."

I've only gotten one speeding ticket (plan on it being my last too) and one fix it ticket which they are right. If it were a while ago it would have been a warning. What a bunch of crap.

  • 5 Signs That You're Too Obsessed With Your Budget   16 years 1 week ago

I disagree. There's no limit to saving, and "saving without a reason" is by default, saving for an emergency. What if my first nest's egg runs out? I need to save for another. And another!

Also, you don't need _any_ money to have fun! Learn an art, like sculpture or sketching, or to play an instrument (I play three) or learn a new human language (I know 5) or study for expertise in some field. Go for a weekend-long camping or rock-climbing or trekking trip with friends. Cook at home. Or improve physical fitness by practicing to run for a marathon. There are a ton of ways to have fun without spending!

  • 4 More Ways to Save on Maternity Clothes   16 years 1 week ago

It's definitely easier to shop when you're small. I miss how easy it was to dress with my first two babies. Most moms tend to be larger sooner with their later children (the case with me) -- but your tips did work well for me when I was younger :)

  • 4 More Ways to Save on Maternity Clothes   16 years 1 week ago

Thanks for your well-wishes! (I couldn't imagine life without our new baby already!) I did use the rubber band tip for the first couple months. I found that a super-thick hair elastic did the best job. I could wear my jeans under a long top for longer than I could without the hair-tie, and that means holding off on buying the belly band, too! Thanks for the reminder :)

    Hey Linsey,

Congrads on your 5th! How wonderful! Hope you and your little one are bonding well. I just wanted to add a couple of tips I found in a magazine when I was preg with my daughter (she's now 20 months). They made it so helpful and cost effective for me -esp. since I didn't have to transition over to maternity clothes until like the 7th or 8th month. Anyway, here they are:

    1. Loop a rubber band through the button hole and secure it around the button (pants or skirt) to give you some extra wear.
    2. Use paper clips inserted in the loops of your bra to give you an extra inch or so.

since I'm an XXS I took full advantage of the baby doll dresses I found on clearance, womens shirts that are designed to be flowy, belly bands to hold up not-all-the-way zipped skirts, and elastic!

I totally love the skirts that are in style right now with the wide strechy waist-bands, which are designed to be worn as a dress or a skirt - it looks cute on me right now, and will still work super well while pregnant!

Teen resale shops have a lot of odd clothing as well, so I could find oddly shaped items that worked well on a pregnant body.

  • Sex Up Your Sandwich: Ideas for Budget Conscious Brown Baggers   16 years 1 week ago

This a late comment but if anyone is still interested,
Za'atar is a thyme mix: thyme, pistachio, sesames, sometimes shredded coconut. You can get the mix at just about any middle eastern grocery store.
Mix the 'mix' with olive oil and spread it over flat bread and put it in the toaster over. Toast it a bit and if you like add olives, cucumbers, and or dip it in sour cream. YUMMM!
