  • What Does Frugal Living Mean to You?   15 years 49 weeks ago

Also, to clarify about frugality, Warren Buffet's house in Omaha was purchased by him in 1958 for $31,500. I like the concept of staying in the same home and living in it when all of the people I know around me are upgrading to the next bigger house. Seriously, how much space do you need??

  • Ask the Readers: To Garage Sale or Not? (Chance to win $20)   15 years 49 weeks ago

If you are making a lot of money at yard sales, that almost certainly means you are losing a lot. It means you likely bought all this stuff retail, and are now selling it for a loss. Thrifty people tend to turn over very little stuff, and so do not make money holding yard sales. Hopefully, though, if you hold a yard sale you are selling things you bought at yard sales, so got to own that item free for a while.

The type of sale you attend makes all the difference. If you want baby stuff, go to neighborhoods with kids. As a rule, I find the more upscale the neighborhood, the more people want for their stuff. Interestingly people in poorer neighborhoods tend to sell stuff cheaper. Upscale people tend to sell stuff they bought new within the last decade. Low-income people do sell more junk overall, but are more likely to have vintage items that they will sell for cheap.

The idea of shopping only with a list, in a way, sets you up for failure, as it can be really difficult to find those exact items. But there are always things you weren't looking for, but would be nice to own, such as a nice coffee table book.

I am an emptynester, but do shop with my married daughter as a way just to spend time with her. I also have asked my other grown children if they are looking for certain things, and shop for them.

Even though I don't "need" anything, I do buy quilt scraps, interesting books, fun looking puzzles, vintage picture frames and other vintage items. I am restocking my "grandma house," meaning I am looking for things for future grand kids when they come to visit. This includes the usual books and toys, but also interesting cool grown up stuff that will just make my house more interesting to a child. I also buy items that would make great gifts. I buy replacement small appliances (such as blenders) to save for when my current one dies. My husband tends to buy tools. Though I make quilts, I could not resist two pieced comforters for $4 each... they are nice enough that I consider them to be guest worthy. I have no problem not buying, so I have no clutter issues. I am a careful buyer.

So for yard sales to be worthwhile, you either need a lot, or you are shopping for other people who need a lot.

  • You’re Fired! 20 Signs That a Pink Slip is Coming   15 years 49 weeks ago

I need some advice. I've been given this clueless newbie to train. I am afraid he's untrainable; I show him the ropes one day, he seems competent in doing the duties the next, and the day after it's like he was never trained at all. Boss has no intention of getting rid of him as the boss just bounced him out of another area where the newbie made a serious mistake with very serious consequences. I have also been tasked to learn the duties of another area; doing both is extremely hard.

I have a lot of seniority. Is this their way of getting me fired without having to pay me severance pay?

I don't mind being laid off as right now the commute is hell (4 hours round trip), working shifts, with the paycheque being the only thing keeping me going. Unable to transfer as there is nothing available, but friends say they may be able to get me in somewhere else.

How do I handle the situation? Do I stay at work and hope they lay me off? Do I quit and hope for the new but significantly less-paying work? Or should I just suck it up and quit whining?

  • 6 Unique Ways to Eat Watermelon   15 years 49 weeks ago

This is a very interesting article on watermelon. I am originally from Mississippi, and we only know of one way to eat watermelon. The thing about it, I like the taste of it, but I don't like to work so hard at eating it because I hate the seeds. Maybe I swallowed one as a child of something. People say there are seedless watermelon, but they are not really seedless.

Never known you could fry it or make sandwiches out of watermelon. I don't know how that would take since I am very fickle about eating.

  • 5 Steps Toward Financial Independence   15 years 49 weeks ago

"Financial independence is a term generally used to describe the state of having sufficient personal wealth to live indefinitely without having to work actively for basic necessities"

What you describe is how to achieve financial dependence. Having to work to attain money to live instead of having your money work for you so you don't have to.

Everyone that uses USAA can contest that they have the best customer service department in the country, bar none. I use USAA for all of my insurance and banking plus I have NFCU accounts for the mortgage and money market funds (even though they aren't paying much). You can't beat em.

  • Ask the Readers: What Makes You a Cheapskate?   15 years 49 weeks ago

I find myself trying to use my AC less and less each year. I think my friends think I am crazy, but I think I prefer the feeling of fans in the house rather than the cold AC air. Plus, I love the satisfaction of knowing that I'm saving both money and the environment.

  • Uglify Your Stuff To Keep It Safe   15 years 49 weeks ago

UGGGGG........ why would anyone want to carry around some ugly camera or ipod? And that bike isnt even a fixie why would anyone want it in the first place? This is the lamest thing i have ever heard of, it is honestly just loosers and crackheads trying to justify how poor and lazy they are because they are too lazy to buy nice stuff!

I would never carry some broken looking ipod or a macbook that was all scratched up! I mean really why? Its not like they are super hard to find or collectable or something. The same people that do this are the same broke people that have cracked screens on their Iphone. These people are too lazy to get a job or dont want to quit doing drugs long enough to buy something so super important! I mean my god who would even talk to you if your stuff was all scratched up like this? I mean really? EEEwwww you would look all types of homeless and stuff.

  • Building a Better Business   15 years 49 weeks ago

    All great tips.

My point would be to find your talent (everyone has one) and turn it into something that other people would be willing to give you money for.

Market it as best you can, start off with as little "start-up" capital as possible, unless you're rich.

Work hard and at some point in time, good things willhappen to you.

The E-Cigarette is one of the newest and most successful alternatives to traditional tobacco cigarettes on the market today. Thanks to brand new technology, smokers can finally enjoy smoking whenever they want and wherever they want. The electronic cigarette looks and acts like a real cigarette in every way except that it does not burn any tobacco. Since the e-cigarette is a non-flammable and non-tobacco product this means it has none of the harmful effects that are found with smoking traditional cigarettes.

The electronic cigarette is the tobacco alternative that smokers all over the world have been waiting for. No more putting up with increased taxes and prices that make smoking nearly impossible. Smokers can finally smoke in places where traditional tobacco cigarettes are banned, giving them back their freedom to enjoy their habit wherever they want. The electronic cigarette is sweeping accross nations all around the world!

Great article! I think a lot of people are taking longer to become independent. I moved out / got a job right after college and spent the last year learning to manage my independence. Most of the people I graduated with, though, are still dependent on others.

Right above the toothpaste video is the statement:

Note: NEVER clean any CD or DVD in a circular motion. Always clean in straight lines from the center of the disc outwards. Otherwise, you'll just make things even worse.

Start the video- only to see the guy putting toothpaste on the CD with nothing but circular motion...

    what's the deal?

  • Ask the Readers: What Makes You a Cheapskate?   15 years 49 weeks ago

My dad introduced us kids to the joys of "curb gleaning" and thrift stores. My husband introduced me to the concept of a written budget. Then I found the Tightwad Gazette in a bookstore on sale. Wo Hoo. It's been a learning experience ever since. Personal finance blogs, Internet research, library and thrift store books. I'm constantly picking up new skills and pushing the boundaries, trying new frugal ways, making the most out of what we have. That's what makes me a cheapskate.
