  • How to Make Moonshine   16 years 1 week ago

    Gator,
yep! It's that simple. You're talking about jacking it instead of distilling it? Put it in a container with a "clicky-fitting" lid and cut a corner off the lid. It won't freeze clean like you can pick the ice out; it'll go to a sort of slush. You can pour the shine out through the cut-out corner that way, leaving the slush behind. It won't freeze overnight, it'll take a day or two, depending on the quantity. You might have to do it a couple of times to boost the alcohol content right up. And then you'll have a load of stuff full of heads and tails. Put it in a saucepan and warm it it gently for a while: (don't bring it to boiling point); that'll get rid of the heads. Haven't figured out a way of getting rid of the the tails by jacking it yet. Incidentally. there's a couple of beers that are 50% alcohol. A brit one called "sink the bismarck" and a german one that I can't recall the name of at the moment. They're both jacked up to the 50% level by freezing them.

  • Is "Health Food" Worse for You than Junk Food?   16 years 1 week ago

Certain things I take issue with. Ok, fast food in moderation, sure. But Dominos is in our school lunchrooms. There is the problem. Its not something that kids given a choice about. Or if they are given a choice are they able to make the right one. Our children are conditioned from kindergarten to desire "fast food" type food, right in our schools. Of course a child is going to choose chicken nuggets over grilled chicken. McD and BK market to a crowd that is not eating at home. ever.

  • 10 Ways to Make Money for the MySpace Generation   16 years 1 week ago

The myspace generation includes college grads so much school debt that it gets in the way of their moving on to other phases of life... unable to buy a house, have kids and so on. My daughter fits this, plus has a job that requires she be "on call." So a second part-time job doesn't work for her. Some of these ideas might work for her.

  • Is "Health Food" Worse for You than Junk Food?   16 years 1 week ago

So are you attacking health food or non-fast food? The headline says health food. The concluding paragraph says health food. But the actual body of the piece says non-fast food. Big difference there. Plus, the headline is pretty misleading in that only a small part of the piece itself is about health food being bad for you.

Furthermore, you fail to link up two major points in your piece: fast food is cheap and our society attacks it more than non-fast food. The problem with fast food is that it's cheap! Restaurants squeeze all sorts of things out of the supply chain by using a ton of corn, using the cheapest, lowest quality meats, etc. Then they sell it to you at a price that makes you want to eat it all the time. The family-owned Italian restaurant downtown has prices that force you to only eat out once or twice a week. Furthermore, these restaurants also don't pretend to be healthy.

Most importantly, you look at economics only from the demand side. You say that since Americans want this food, the restaurants aren't doing anything wrong. But anyone who knows a thing or two about marketing knows that that's not how it works. People don't always ask for things that they buy. Sometimes you make them want it. We didn't always have fast food in America. There was a time when we survived without it. Do you mean to tell me that the reason why it exists and is so popular right now is ONLY because Americans asked for it? No! Americans didn't even know what to ask for before it came along. The food industry made it and convinced us that we like it. And they continue to do so every day. How do you think the people in the study got their perceptions that the non-fast food was healthy? In a similar way to how they got their perceptions that the fast food is tasty. Sure, part of it is demand. But you have to look at what the suppliers are doing too.

I like the idea of less maintenance. It's a great bonus to saving money on water usage as well. Thanks for the comment.

  • 5 Signs That You're Too Obsessed With Your Budget   16 years 1 week ago

IMO point 3 cleans up both points 1 and 2 -- if you give yourself "fun" money, you can spend money on the "little things" without pulling your hair out over it. That is what the "fun" money is for!

With respect to point 4, I think that *any* saving has some point to it. If you aim to save 3-6 months of expenses, fine. If you throw more in just in case the roof goes bad, fine. If you have 3-6 months saved...and just feel comfortable with more, fine. If anything, "extra" saving could be for peace of mind...and I think that is a perfectly good reason.

  • Xeriscaping to Promote Water Conservation   16 years 1 week ago

I agree that we need to use less of our water resources in semi-arid Southern California watering lawns, and Xeriscaping is a great way to do so.

However, I disagree that we are in our fourth year of dought. The drought is officially over, as snowpack levels in the Sierra at are above average levels this year, and many of the states lakes and reservoirs are at or near capacity. The LA Times ran a story on the end of the drought and they even include references to data that support this assertion.

    http://www.latimes.com/news/custom/scimedemail/la-me-water-drought-20100...

I also agree that we should keep up with the strict water control measures. As Southern Californians, we all need to be vigilant in our conservation efforts and make a lifestyle and cultural change to consume less water.

  • You did WHAT with my SSN?   16 years 1 week ago

I don't like giving out my SSN either. Being duped as a youngster (12-13) on chat channels I later found myself with charges from Dell computers adding up to around $9000. Luckily It was all removed, but that was scary.

My wifes mother has this site she goes to to look up unreleased money held by the gov. or state or whatever (unclaimed money - legit site I'm sure, but creeps me out some). She asked me for my SSN to look it up and I told her I don't know this website and will not do it. My wife and her mother looked at me like I was crazy. Sorry but your crazy if you think im handing my SSN down to some online company through someone elses computer!@

Anyway I never read blogs much, but yours are interesting. Keep it up!

  • Are Your Financial Habits Just Bad?   16 years 1 week ago

I've stopped using my debit and credit cards as much as I used to. Went back to using personal checks because I actually have to write down the number I'm spending. Sure-you can still keep track of personal finances using plastic. But who does? I kept falling into the trap of paying for everything I wanted with the flip of my wrist.
Using personal checks like these http://www.checkadvantage.com/ made a big difference!

  • Xeriscaping to Promote Water Conservation   16 years 1 week ago

I've been contemplating doing this with at least some of my yard recently. I live way up in the northern reaches of the midwest, so water isn't really an issue here, but it's still a cost. That and the extra time saved on mowing the lawn could be well worth the effort of xeriscaping it.

  • My car payments are too much! What should I do?   16 years 1 week ago

You know, oddly enough, I don't think it impacted my credit negatviely at all. I could be wrong, but I have never found paying off debts to do anything bad to my credit - it always seems to recover brilliantly once a debt is gone.

  • My car payments are too much! What should I do?   16 years 1 week ago

Awesome! I am actually at the end of my 6 year payoff of my truck and I am glad! I have 1 year left. Although I do worry about how it will affect my credit. I've heard good standing LONG term accounts look better. Once this is paid off, most of my other credit history is short (1-2 years).
I actually want to pay off the final 6k with my income tax and be done with it. Im just hoping this payoff will put my score back into the 600's as I've made bad decisions in the past and will be in the market for a house soon with my new wife. Good luck to you!

P.S. How did selling and paying off the loan affect your credit? Positively or negatively?

  • How to Get Your Boss to Let You Work From Home   16 years 1 week ago

If your company happens to be spread out geographically and there are only a few of you in your area, a great selling point is savings on rent (assuming you all work from home). This is very typical in sales and becoming more so in consulting work.

The cost savings for not having an office in your town can be huge! Factor in rent, utilities, cleaning, and supplies and your boss will be thanking YOU for the budget surplus.

When you need to get together with others in your area, meet at a coffee shop or looking into local coworking groups. They'll often rent you a conference room for a day which is significantly cheaper than rent.

  • 7 Ways My Clunker Is Smarter Than a Hybrid   16 years 1 week ago

Funny, right before I read this I was just thinking how grateful I am for my '97 Honda Odyssey and no car payment. She's got just over 100K on her, and I'm anticipating about another 4-5 years before she's just not serviceable anymore with major expense. Still, even if I was paying $100 a month in maintenance that's still cheaper than any car payment out there. She get about 22 mpg in normal driving, and if I'm on the highway a lot it's close to 30. Works for me. :)
