Don't fret the small stuff, it's a long walk back to Eden. LOL. No need to worry. If you made all your mash out of wood, I would be worried, but just a bit is less then the fiber you get from fresh fruit juice. You will never know the difference.
I have the pleasure of working with Dr. Wansink at mindlessproducts.com and mindlessmethod.com. Dr. Wansink is a world leader in the eating behaviors of people and the author of the book you mentioned, "Mindless Eating." He does warn people of "Health Halos." This basically means that eateries that advertise or present themselves as being healthy can fool us. Maybe they are healthy, maybe not. The danger is that we may eat twice as much because we "think" it is lower in calories. If we are strictly talking calories (which is all the body know when it comes to weight gain and weight loss), we might have been better off with the big mac.
When two people are forced together out of family obligation in a society that looks at a divorced woman as a pariah - yeah the divorce rate will be small. Societal pressure is what keeps these arranged marriages in check. Not bliss.
My wife is India, a place where more marriages are arranged, Her sister has a high school friend who was shipped off to Pakistan to me married to her cousin - the day AFTER she graduated high school. They live in the US. Her husband verbally abuses her and generally ignores her. I'm sure she's NOT loving here arranged marriage. She won't divorce him as she is financially dependent on him and her family would disown her.
"Take Los Angeles or New York for example. Living as an independent adult costs much more in these cities in the long run than choosing to live in a city where the cost of living is half the price."
But one can also argue that there may be more opportunities for work/education etc in those cities that in " a city where the cost of living is half the price.".
I agree there is no advantage to buying (really mortgaging) a house versus renting. But ... not all decision in life is about what is logical. I mean what is the point of life is you live it based on finances alone? Those decision of heart may be costly but they may bring you a life that money can't buy.
I chose my profession (Engineering and Information Management) based on my ability and my love of the caraft. Could I make more money as a lawyer or doctor? Sure. Would my life feel more fulfilled? Absolutely not. Choosing your profession based on what it pays is a recipe for unhappiness in life. Do what you love and the money will come. Just be frugal with it.
Yes it's way too commercial, but it's still fun and doesn't have to be expensive. I make heart shaped biscuits or pancakes for the family and we enjoy our little chocolate treats.
Nice advice on short term CDs! I'd say stick to anything below 12 months at this time (6 month would be ideal). Then, when rates start increasing I'd look into building a CD ladder to stay in front of the trends and, finally, right before interest rates peak again (such as they did before the market burst of '08) you should move into long term CD's to lock in higher rates to last through the downswing. For example, if you locked in a 5 year CD in Sept of 08 you could have gotten close to 6% APY which would have carried you through Sept of '13. Now the top 5 year CD's are barely paying 2% APY.
Personally, I would think rates are going to remain this low through at least the rest of the year (esp if the dow keeps zig zagging above and below 10,000).
I think your list is great, I think people often lose their way when they get a great idea and don't generate enough to make it a business and lose heart. I recently went to a free seminar and found it really useful at the end the lady that have given the speach was offering her advice on a one to one, she passed on her business card and made it a point to speak to people and network - the set up really worked for her.
No, waiters do not always deserve a tip and I'm not going to worry about it. Here's a tip for ya: Get a job where you are paid for your work and don't have to rely on tips.
I saw my firing from a mile away, but was still shocked when it happened. My manager spent 3 months making a case to get rid of me and I spent 3 months trying to plug every hole she made in the proverbial dam. Two weeks before she got rid of me, the president of the company praised my work ethic, but she claimed I had a 'performance issue'.
How did I cope? Going to the gym helped. Having an incredibly supportive husband helped. Mostly, though, I decided to promise myself that this time in between jobs would not be wasted. I've lost 11 pounds, joined a book group, visited family, started a blog, collaborated on a book, put in a garden and had knee surgery.
Don't get me wrong, money's tight and thank goodness we don't have kids and can still afford the mortgage. Given those two items in the 'pros' column, I have done my best to take full advantage of these 7 months and hopefully, in a couple more months I'll be pursuing my bachelor's degree or gainfully employed and looking back on this unemployed first year of marriage (we're calling it an extended honeymoon) fondly.
My husband has just recently been declared bankrupted. I thought it was the end of the world until a good friend of mine introduced me to the online coupon world that has save me and my family lives, at least we are eating properly while on low budget.
Thankyou for the great list of coupon sites! Now Im addicted in collecting these sites and recently I have found a new one : Myzerr. If you're interested, you can go and have a look, no harm trying right?
Hi Andrea~
It was very tough to go through that situation twice..Now that we may face it again, I decided to try to help him out by working my regular retail job AND work for free (internship) at a medical building.
I have been doing this internship for 6 weeks now and HOPE they will hire me in 6 more weeks. If not, I am hoping they put their name on my resume' so I can get a job in this field. All I did was ask this facility if I could intern for them and they agreed! And so far, we all get along really well. Even if it doesn't work out in my favor, I still have my retail job.
Thanks for your good thoughts! I want to tell anyone who has been let go by their employer that sometimes it can be a good thing and other times, it can be devastating. But don't give up. Sometimes, the employers have their own internal drama and it's best to try not to get wrapped up in it. Just keep pressing forward and something good is bound to come your way!
I believe the author meant if they only sold soy burgers. A few veggie items does not change burger king's overall appeal. However, if they change all their items to veggie, i think it is likely that BK would lose a lot of money.
You know what's even better? My other half and I signed up to get one, and when in the process of activating the card they told us they needed us to fax them a copy of our social security cards and birth certificates, fishy eh? We totally dropped it after that.
I've never heard of a service like this! It would be so perfect for us, but there's nothing like it near this sleepy little farming town. Too bad, too...
Here's a great tip I got from my allergist: purchase the bed wrap for your mattress and one for your box spring. Mattresses are often filled with dust mites and where we spend a lot of time. At first I was skeptical thinking it would be like a plastic waterproof, crinkly wrap (eww), but it is just like a silky sheet that wraps around your mattress or box spring. Plus, you can purchase these anywhere like Bed, Bath & Beyond (use a coupon) or Kohls (use a discount code and purchase when the Bonus Bucks are on). Also, we use an air purifier in our bedroom; again, because we spend a lot of time sleeping. I also like that ours has "white noise" so I'm not hearing every little sound. Hope this helps!
Although they made some valid points, they also were incredibly intentionally misleading to all those in the study (yes we're victims to our own psychology sometimes... ok frequently), and they also compared one of the healthier fast food places around with some of the fattiest heavy french dishes possible. As usual with penn and tellers bull5h1t!, they make good points but heavily bias what is presented, I love the show but sometimes they go a bit far to make a point
I feel if your answers are honest, you stand a good chance on giving the interviewers what they want to hear. And going online and looking up 'questions and answers on a interview' and practicing the answers with a friend or spouse really does help with being nervous on said interview. And ask the interviewer similar questions are a very good idea as well. Good luck on your next interview.
There are no guarantees for returns as with many investment products. At the time of writing, the returns represented rates over the past 20-30 years.
Money set aside in a Roth IRA can be distributed tax-free and is available before you die to spend as you like; contributions can be taken out with no penalties but earnings need to be taken out for retirement. See your tax advisor.
Umbrella policies are generally very inexpensive and can be purchased separately ($100-200 or so for $1 million of coverage, for example); these proceeds should be available if needed without tapping other investments.
There can be advantages to separating investments from insurance.
1. What guarantee do you have that you will make 5 or even 10%? Stocks over the last 30 years have made only 5.43%.
2. Your not actually making 5 or 10% You making anywhere between 20% to 40% less than that, because you didn't factor in taxes to that equation. Factor that in, and then the spread narrows. Life Insurance is tax free.
3. What about asset protection? If you get sued, that money in the policy doesn't get touched. You should add in the cost of an umbrella policy to that as well, if you don't factor in that benefit.
Whole Life Insurance hasn't been around for years because it's a rip-off or doesn't provide proper benefits.
try this site... http://www.projectpayday.com/go/2815505 This is the only legit site ive found to make money, research it if you like but you will make money no one will ever dispute that and its all free, this site isnt going to make you a millionaire over night or anything but then again that just goes to show you this is real money, all done through pay pal.

Hi Amy, thanks for including my post on getting your car ready for a roadtrip!

I disagree. Fast food isn't bad in moderation. Very rare is it that there is an item that is good if you eat it all the time.

Moderation would go a LONG way toward improving the diets of North Americans. Most restaurants give you way too much food per serving.
