  • 8 Vile Craigslist Scams to Watch Out For   12 years 11 weeks ago

I have just been a victim of a craigslist s scam. My bank account is now negative of $2519. Here is what happened: On Saturday, April 12th of this year (2014), I answered an ad from the famous craigslist website for a child caregiver job. The mother, who goes with the name of Laura Johnson answers me Sunday, 20th via email. She tells me that she is moving from Phoenix to Los Angeles because last December she lost her husband and her 4 months old baby in a car accident. She tells me that the only survivor is her 6 year old kid, named Joe, who is now in a wheelchair. Of course I am affected and moved by this story. I even cried when I read her email. So she needs a babysitter/caregiver for the first weekend of when she arrives; May 10th and she wants us to meet the 9th to assure that I am reliable. She sent me a picture of her and her handicap son. Everything was very believable. She wants to have everything ready for when they arrive in Los Angeles. So she asks me to accept the delivery of the new wheelchair she ordered so that it is here for when they move. The wheelchair is supposed to be delivered at my own place. She sends me a check of $2775 to pay for the delivery and to cover my first week of work ($2523 for the wheelchair + $252 for my first week paid in advance). She asks me to deposit the check at the bank and then to transfer it to the seller who will deliver the wheelchair. So I do. The check got returned to the bank and my account is now in a negative balance. I contacted the bank and they tell me that I am responsible because I am the one who deposited it into my account. The bank will not return me the money. The person to who I transferred the money is named Orma Daniels, she banks with Bank of America and I have her account number. Also, the check that I have received of an amount of $2775 was sent through Fedex and a signature was required. It was sent from a person named Tyler Jones and the sender's address is; Stihl Inc. 536 Viking Drive Virginia Beach, VA 23452 I kept the envelope. We first communicated via email and then switched to text messaging because it was quicker. She also told me that she was death so I could not call her, this should really have ringed the bell, but I was so happy to help someone in need that I did not even pay attention to all of those (now obvious) signs. As soon as the money was transferred, she told me that she would contact me for the delivery of the wheelchair and then never got back to me. We set an appointment for the delivery the next day but she cancelled it and I have never heard from her again. I have ALL of our email conversations and text messages. I also have the original craigslist ad. I took pictures of the check that I received (to prove her that I had received it well) and pictures of the receipt of the deposit that I made on the seller's account. I was worried that she would think that I was a scam and that I would keep the money for myself. I could not imagine that she (or HE) was actually the scammer. I have witnesses, friends that were with me when she (or he) was texting me to go to the bank and send her proof of the deposit. And my mother to whom I very proudly told that I had found a new child caregiving job.

  • You're Washing Your Clothes Too Often! (What to Do Instead)   12 years 11 weeks ago

Another idea - if clothes only have a slight sweaty odor, I often toss them in the dryer with a damp wash cloth or hand towel and a dryer sheet for 10-20 minutes. It "steams" the odors out without a full wash and dry cycle.

I'm a long term traveler and frequently get clothes sweaty on long walks or bus rides. I would love to figure out other ways to prolong time between washing since here in South America self-service laundry is rare and dryers even rarer, so inevitably you can't wash everything at once and something is always out of commission in an already limited wardrobe.

  • Build a Cable to Control Your Android Phone While You Drive   12 years 11 weeks ago

I just did this to have control over my my self built BoomBox. It works, but only after I attatched the salvaged circuit from the headset that came with my phone. My Sony Experia L seems to have some function implemented, that checks for a mic. if the mic-circuit is not attached, the remote doesn't work at all.

Just thought I'd leave this here in case someone tries this on their Sony phone and wonders why it doesn't work. This might also be implemented in other brand's phones.

  • You Never Need to Pay to Watch Movies — Here's Why   12 years 11 weeks ago

One problem I have with library DVDs is they are often dirty or scratched. My trick is to wash them first with white toothpaste. Dot the disc with toothpaste and wipe it onto the disc from the center out before rinsing and drying with a lint-free cloth.

It works great and makes those DVDs that look like they were used in a frisbee game watchable.

  • The Needless 9: Insane Luxury Items For You to Laugh At   12 years 11 weeks ago

I agree with Susan. Most people I know who have bought a dog stroller got it so an elderly or ill dog could still enjoy "walks."

You'd probably find my dog bike cart ridiculous too. But since I don't have a car, it makes a ten mile trip to the park possible. That's a pretty far walk. But it's nothing with a bike.

  • 14 Ways to Retire Early   12 years 11 weeks ago

Saving as much money as you can for retirement is good, but I think having a steady stream of passive income after I retire is much better. I'm in my mid 30's, and I have been buying rental properties since I was 25. By the time I turn 55, all my rental properties will be fully paid off and the positive cash flow each month will be more than enough for me to retire comfortably. However, this may work great for me, being a landlord of multiple properties is not easy and it's definitely not for everyone.

Useless? Maybe . . . but I kind of like the looks of the hovercar and a good pen is hard to find.

Some summers I pick up lots of picture frames at garage sales for .25 to 1.00 (thank you high divorse rate). Then, I paint them up to look nice, and get a framed photo of the granddaughters in it.

  • 40 Rice Cake Topping Ideas   12 years 11 weeks ago

Just found your blog after I tried using plain rice cakes out of desperation as a bread substitute for my favorite snack - I (carefully and watchfully) crisped one up in my toaster oven, and topped with chopped orange bell pepper, a slice of low sodium american cheese and a sprinkle of garlic powder. White pizza, of a sort :) Been my fav snack for decades on very thin bread but celiac left me sadly missing it.

  • The Needless 9: Insane Luxury Items For You to Laugh At   12 years 11 weeks ago

Fun post-but I have to disagree about the dog stroller.

When my JackRussell/Beagle mix, Ranger, turned 17 ( he lived until the age of 18),
he could no longer keep up with our 2 year old hound mix, Boomer, on our daily walks. We left him home exactly once-it broke our hearts to watch him be so confused as to why he wasn't coming along.

I got on the internet to look for a used kiddie stroller-but found the ones made just for dogs. For us, it was a quality of life issue-for a loyal companion that was my children's dog from 1st grade to college graduation, it was worth it.

    The other stuff? Yeah. Useless.

  • The Only 5 Grocery Shopping Techniques You Need   12 years 11 weeks ago

One thing that has helped me figure out how much to buy to carry me over to the next sale is a marker. When I open something coffee, shampoo, etc. I write the date on the container then when I am running low, I can see how long the product lasted. It is a simple thing, and it really helps me to stock up when prices are at their lowest.

  • 14 Ways to Retire Early   12 years 11 weeks ago

My wife and I are focusing all of our savings and effort toward early retirement. We have focused on lowering our living expenses (we currently only need 40% of our income for essential expenses) and saving the rest for retirement and other long term goals. We are pumping our Roth IRA's because we like the tax advantages in the future and we have been putting quite a bit into my 401k up till this point. I think the coolest thing of all of this has been that we actually consider early retirement a real possibility.

  • How to Travel Full-Time for $17,000 a Year (or Less!)   12 years 11 weeks ago

I love travel, having travelled full-time for a number of years. However, personally I prefer travelling for only a month or two at a time. I don't like the pressure of always having to budget so carefully which, ironically, is a small price to pay for some people but isn't for me. You can totally do it, as you've show here - but unless you really hate your job or where you come from, why would you? I guess I just got to the point where working abroad wasn't any better than working in my home country.

  • Ask the Readers: How Do You Celebrate Mother's Day Frugally?   12 years 11 weeks ago

I tend to shop all spring for my family... most birthdays and gift-giving times fall between January and June in my family. Experiences, something I know she wants, or things that remind of her that come through the thrift store where I volunteer are all fair game! I love a discount, so usually things I buy her are at least half off the original price.

  • netSpend: The Story of the Visa Debit Card We Did Not Apply For   12 years 11 weeks ago

I had a netspend card & there was no problem for awhile. Then I had a charge for $2.00 I didn't authorize so I called to ask what it was. They told me it was possible fraud. They froze my card & I couldn't use it. At that time it had around $40 on it. They told me in order tounfreeze the card I needed to fax my drivers license and social security card to a fax number. No way I was doing that. So I just let the $40 go. Now I get a new card I didn't apply for & when I called to inquire. And also btw what about my $40? They said my old card had a zero balance. So apparently they took my $40 due to "fraud" that didn't exist. They do make money from fees, but I think they make more from freezing accts.

  • 9 Hidden Health Benefits of Living on the East Coast   12 years 11 weeks ago

I love leaving in the east coast. Yes, we got hit with Sandy last year but besides that, all we get is a little snow every once in a while. I also love that I can get to about half the world in 6 hours or less so the flights are cheaper. And like you said, the traffic is not that bad. It could get crazy in cities like NY or Boston but that's why they have a robust metro system. People in the know don't drive in those cities unless is absolutely necessary.

The Jersey Shore folks give our coast a bad rep, but they have their own characters in the west coast.
