  • Ask the Readers: Have You Ever Been Audited by the IRS?   12 years 22 weeks ago

My husband was when we were separated. WHAT A NIGHTMARE!!! Thank Goodness i had been organized and had all the info in folders for him. I was dreading that they would somehow need to audit ME! No problems were noted...everything was fine. Only i spend many restless/sleepless nights worrying over "what if.." NEVER want to go through that again. Can't even imagine what would happen if we hadn't always been honest when fileing taxes!

Those quinoa patties look amazing! I've been buying frozen broccoli a lot lately. It's so nice to have it chopped and ready to cook.

  • 10 Fun and Delicious Ways to Use Tortillas   12 years 22 weeks ago

We love tortillas here, a family with 4 kids. Every Friday night is "make your own pizza" night and we brown hamburger, make ranch sauce with taco seasoning, and add salsa instead of pizza sauce for a latino flair, or we use chicken and mozzerella for something more traditionally Italian. The kids can make it themselves, and watch as we put it in the oven for them. And they are yummy!

You touched on this with the sandwiches - we make Quesadilla burgers with them - again, the ranch with taco seasoning, along with all the fixings of a great burger, in a torilla (halved or wrapped around the meat.) They are very similar to Applebees' Quesadilla burgers!

  • The Cheap Girl’s Guide to Lowering Cholesterol Without Suffering   12 years 22 weeks ago

As I aged, I gave up red meat then chicken and finally, after watching Forks Over Knives, I am now a vegan. I used to love cheese, eggs, fish... but found that as my meal plan changed so did my tastes (I hadn't noticed how smelly cheese really is before I gave it up).

It was a sin how many pizzas I ate as a young man, having worked for most of the well-known pizza chains. I used to eat pizza for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I also used to create my own baked derivatives using dough, sauce, and cheese.

My real weakness/addiction, I found, was sugar. FOK smacked me in the head with that realization. My routine used to include eating a half-gallon of ice cream every week - and this was after I began to call myself a vegetarian!

By committing to intelligent veganism, I returned to my high school weight in about a month, my knee pain (I couldn't do a squat without intense pain) is gone, and I have more energy. The kicker, for me, is that I actually exercise LESS than I did before changing my diet.

I didn't mean for my comment to turn into a testimonial but I'm so happy to be awake to and free from the processed foods we're marketed that I couldn't help myself.

What I really want to know is: it's been two years since you shared this post. How are you doing, Martha?

Regarding #21: Flan is not a filled cake. Flan is a creamy custard. Typically, it's sweet, with a caramel sauce. In this case, pureed asparagus is mixed with the custard.

  • DIY Shampoo: The Baking Soda Experiment   12 years 22 weeks ago

I've been using the bs shampoo and the acv conditioner (1 Tbl bs to 8 oz water and 1 Tbl acv to 8 oz water) for one week now. I will never go back. I wet my hair in the shower, squirt on the bs shampoo in several place, massage in thoroughly and then rinse thoroughly off under the shower head. Then I apply the acv conditioner by squirting over areas of my head and massaging in thoroughly. Then, I continue with my shower and as the last step I rinse my hair under the shower head. btw, I placed both mixtures in their own water bottle right now with "BS" written on the top of the lid on one and ACV on the top of the lid of the other.

My hair is shoulder length, full but fine in texture and very flat. This regiment does the trick. My hair is full like using a volumizing shampoo and is very "squeaky" clean. You know how your hair feels when you squeeze it and it squeaks. I am wondering though if anyone has thought about how we can make the mixtures into jell. Like can we use surejell or some other product to make it thicker so it goes further with less waste. Also, do you think can mix the bs shampoo and acv conditioner together and do it in one step. Thus, just having one bottle in the shower. And finally, I notice I have to constantly shake the bs shampoo to keep them mixed. Will it stay dissolved if I boil the bs shampoo mixture before filling the bottle?

Thanks so much for your comment and for sharing your experience.

  • How to Balance Saving for Retirement, Emergency Fund, and Paying Off Debt   12 years 22 weeks ago

Thanks for your comment, Pip. I am so glad to hear that Amex explained that to you. I worked for Amex for 4 years (and have been a cardmember for 16 years) and I can say from an outside and inside perspective that their servicing is second to none. I wish the advice they gave you got more publicity - it's one of the things that makes FICO scores so difficult to understand.

  • Forget Your Weaknesses and Build on Your Strengths to Find Success   12 years 22 weeks ago

Yes yes yes! Completely agree! I left my corporate job almost 2 years ago to start my own content development company. Every day, I build content in many forms for my own projects and for others. It's an incredibly satisfying way to live. I could have stayed at my corporate job - I was good at it and had built a lot o good will there. I was also bored, frustrated, and generally lacked any love for the work. Taking the risk and plunging into my venture was difficult, and it's still a challenge every day, but I feel more alive than ever.

  • Debit Or Credit? Which One Should You Choose At The Checkout?   12 years 22 weeks ago

if you use a "hacked" card reader (ie one that has had a skimmer installed) it makes no difference ehat option you choose. This is because your card's data is read by the skimmer as well as the actual card reader. PIN numbers are hashed and stored on the card, and since they are only 4 characters long and contain only numbers, they are exceedingly easy to crack. Even if you choose credit, since your card also has debit tied to the same number, you are at risk.

The only solution is to use a seperate card for credit purchases.

  • This Trick Could Help You Finally Pay Off Your Debt   12 years 22 weeks ago

My husband is the best accountability partner I could have! :) While it's not always fun, knowing that my choices affect him directly, as well as our future, is huge in helping me to reign things in. We WILL have the money chat again soon, and I WILL have to explain myself and my spending. Plus, it is super fun to have someone to get excited with when we reach a goal. Celebration is the key to staying sane in a long-term debt repayment situation like ours!

  • 25 Simple Recipes for 25 Delicious Veggies   12 years 22 weeks ago

Hello, guest. Thank you for your feedback. I suppose it depends on where you shop. In my grocery store, broth is pretty inexpensive and I usually use herbs from my garden (and a few indoor pots during these colder months). If it's the warmer market season, we save on groceries with a CSA share, and there are usually a good amount of fresh herbs each week. I'd say looking at all the options for sources of foods is helpful with paring down the costs. And best of luck with your veggie consumption! A great way to save on veggies, again, is with a CSA share through a local farmer -- or buying those veggies that are in season.

  • Ask the Readers: Have You Ever Been Audited by the IRS?   12 years 22 weeks ago

No! It is an irrational fear of mine... everything we do with our money is above board, but since we are self-employed we have an accountant do our taxes just as a precaution.

  • Ask the Readers: Have You Ever Been Audited by the IRS?   12 years 22 weeks ago

No I've never been audited, thankfully.

  • 8 Vile Craigslist Scams to Watch Out For   12 years 22 weeks ago

I have been applying for jobs advertised on Craigslist that describes front desk receptionist. I get an email back stating that position has been filled but, he needs a personal secretary....I have received many of these saying the same thing....$500 a week, they are always out of the country and will contact me as soon as they get back, very confidential but need me to start now..just send them name, address and telephone...but, i had sent my ruseme' already....i know this is a scam so be careful.

  • 25 Simple Recipes for 25 Delicious Veggies   12 years 22 weeks ago

The one I checked out (French Onion soup) would not be frugal to make. Two quarts of beef broth would not be inexpensive. Fresh herbs are not cheap and if I only need a few sprigs I would be left with the rest of the (expensive) bunch. I would have been more likely to try vegetable recipes that were both delicious and frugal to make. I appreciate the idea though as I'm trying to increase my vegetable consumption.

  • How to Balance Saving for Retirement, Emergency Fund, and Paying Off Debt   12 years 22 weeks ago

    Solid advice!

I think a lot of people don't realise about the credit used:credit available ratio.

I only learned this when I was extended more credit on my Amex I called to reduce it back down again. If it is reduced, it apparently doesn't show if that is due to the individual pro-actively doing it, or the lender taking credit away, hence can be perceived negatively! They were very straightforward in explaining this to me, which I was pleasantly surprised at!
