We purchased a house so lots of surprise expenses around moving, getting the apartment we were renting ready for move-out (e.g., having to paint), and settling into the new house. I try to budget for these extra things each year, but this year was especially rough!
Vegan diets exclude meat as well as animal byproducts such as eggs, milk, and cheese. If you'd like to narrow down your own search, I would look for vegan recipes instead of vegetarian.
Daisy, my wife and I are kind of in a similar situation! We aren't huge fans of winter to begin with so it doesn't make it more enjoyable when its almost as cold inside as it is outside! I think sealing the leaks would be really helpful along with closing off vents in other rooms we don't use a lot. What have you done to make sure you seal those leaks?
Winter is coming and my wife and I are trying to think of effecient ways to keep our home heated. I like the idea of closing off unused space; such as rooms we don't use very often. I think this will help keep the warm air in the rooms we frequently are in. It could also help us limit our heating repairs because we wont need to use as much heat as we usually would. Thanks for the great tips!
Your not going to believe this. All items on my receipt are food items, paid with food stamp card, okay, one item named bologna actually rang up as taxable. With food stamps they are not suppose to charge tax on food items. Am in Tn.
We bought a home last year so our big financial surprise was paying the home warranty. It's not a must but there are several older components to our home. Last year the seller paid but we would have broke even using it the two times we did. It is equal to an extra mortage payment so it's not pennies but it certainly didn't derail our financial progress. This is exactly why we save and why we intentionally bought less house than we can afford.
I had unplanned car expenses for my car. With triple digit summer weather, my car air conditioning would turn off. After 3 different trips to the mechanic and multiple parts replaced, I took a hit on $1000 for those repairs. Luckily. I was able to use some savings and my credit card to pay for the repairs. Even with regular car maintenance, things do wrong.
When you say keep a balance of no more than 20%-30%, do you mean keeping that amount past due? I've never understood what this meant, but I've always paid off my credit cards in full each month.
In the past 12 months, we have had to replace a wall in our bathroom, our furnace, our air conditioner, and our refrigerator. Not a great year for home repairs!
You need to start life insurance as young as you can, when you get employment, married, and especially when you start a family. You never know what lies in the future for you, and you need to be prepared.
Yes! I started law school as well as my first office job, and had to buy a wardrobe suitable for appearances in court as well as business casual clothes. Books, a new laptop, (ours was 6 years old), and a good desk chair were also unexpected as of January 1!
I buy shoes/boots, make-up, purses, clothes and sometimes, furniture /appliances. All these things mentioned definitely do last longer and are for sure better quality. I do agree with the author of this article. On the other hand, I do have to be disciplined. As I have been known to impulse buy! Which does and can cancel out any savings that I went to the store for in the first place lol!

Medical! Had to have surgery. :(

I get where you are coming from but sometimes you can't put a price on love! :)
Yes I got 2 flats so I had to get all 4 new tires.
Yes, our cat has been a real money sink this year as he's been ill.

Oh, my allergies are supposed to get easier in the fall? I guess no one told them.

bought a house so many surprised, mostly oil to gas conversion.
No. Thankfully :)
I had to buy a new car! I got a new job and my old beater couldn't (reliably) make the long commute.

I have a classic car. I shouldn't keep being surprised when it needs more money poured into it, but I still am.
This is a very good list with some creative costume ideas. I intend to pass it on. Thanks!
