  • Ask the Readers: How Do You Save Money on Your Pets?   13 years 42 weeks ago

since my income has been drastically reduced, i've had to "re-think" alot of things i attempt...we had a wonderful dog a few years ago, he died when i refused to spend more on that poor animal (for a $4k operation that may or not have made a difference in his "quality of life")...during Brownie's life, we spent more on his vet visits than we spent on my own son's health...it's been 4 years since Brownie's death, so a coupla' months ago, we "rescued" B or Bianca...she had up-to-date shots, was neutered & has the "chip"...she was advertised as a Keeshond, but is brindle in coloring & is VERY smart...i love matching wits w/her & trying to retain my alpha "leader" stance...training
B to help me when i don't have the energy to complete a task is my eventual goal...but
recent loss of income puts B's training "on the back burner"...B is swiftly becoming a member of this family & i look forward to her first veterinary visit in a coupla' months...
b/c the cost may be prohibitive, but like any family member, up-to-date medical care is very important

I don't have pets, therefore don't spend any money on them. Problem averted.

  • Best Money Tips: Best Items to Buy Now   13 years 42 weeks ago

I don't know about you, but I alway shop on sale only. I save a lot of money this way, buying 3 pieces of shoes for the price of 2 for example. Kids grow and they grow to fast, so I have to buy them new stuff all the time, so such money saving tips are in place.

Dr. Anderson who did the China research with cinnamon, says he uses a water-soluble extract. "We recommend that people take ¼ to 1 teaspoon daily," he tells us. "Or if they want to take more, boil cinnamon in water and pour off the soluble portion and discard the solid cinnamon." Increasing the amount of cinnamon that you use won't cure your diabetes. But it could reduce how much insulin or oral medications you need. That means you will need to test even more often. -- mendosa.com/cinnamon.htm I add cinnamon powder to "green" smoothies and put a teaspoon in the brewing basket as the last 2 cups of water drip through the grounds. (if I put the cinnamon in at the start, it blocks the filter and makes the coffee brew too slowly.) htctu -- ajw, AJsBodBlog

  • 20 Great Frugal Skills — and How to Get Them   13 years 42 weeks ago

The only problem with this though is they give you the lowest grade "just enough" oil to get you out the door. Show me one shop that will put fully synthetic oil in your vehicle for cheaper/close to the price of you doing it yourself. On the flip-side of that coin of yours you can also look around for sales, coupons, whatever and find fully synthetic oil AND a good filter (not just some crappy made, quickly thrown together brown paper bag filter).

  • Universal Life Insurance and Whole Life Insurance: A Comparison   13 years 42 weeks ago

Loved the article until the last paragraph. More is guaranteed with whole life coverage. I have seen too many UL policies fall apart because they got underfunded. The family was left trying to figure out how to afford the increasing premium for parents. Whole Life you know if you pay the premium you will have coverage. Ask to see a illustration showing the guarenteed premium on a UL policy. It will scare you.

  • How to Grocery Shop for Five on $100 a Week   13 years 42 weeks ago

I want to give a shout out to my favorite grocery chain: the Grocery Outlet (aka The Gross Out). They have great selections of organics in both produce, meats, dairy and frozen stuff. And they just have some wacky stuff that can be fun with some creativity. And their wine is a great deal! I never pay more than $4.99 for a bottle and they often retail for $10-18.

I'm not a paid spokesperson, I just love that place!!

  • How to Use Portion Control to Lose Weight   13 years 42 weeks ago

Diets don't work because a diet is not a lifestyle change. Avoiding high fructose corn syrup, processed foods, is key. Instead of eating fast food or pre-made meals eat grass feds meats, cage free eggs, and organic produce. I don't watch my portion sizing or count carbs; however, since I eat healthy and exercise I can build muscle and keep the weight off. If you want to be healthy you have to live healthy, and just like personal finance there are no shortcuts.

Getting therapeutic results from flavoring with cinnamon spice is a myth; only cinnamon extract works.

  • What Americans Can Learn From How the Rest of the World Saves Energy   13 years 42 weeks ago

Many cars in Europe are the same model as those in the U.S., just outfitted with a smaller (or smarter) engine. My blog is really boring: all my posts say, here is this car, it's cool in these ways, and it's available in the U.S. only with the very largest, gas-hoggiest engines. Generally, we have _way_ more power under the hood than we actually need, because it's cool to have vroom-vroom. In Europe, it's cool to be gas-frugal. AND their government is pushing for 57mpg by 2020: nice synergy there.

  • How to Grocery Shop for Five on $100 a Week   13 years 42 weeks ago

I spend about $50 a week for my girlfriend and I on grass fed meat and organic produce, and I shop at Fairway which is a high end grocer that is somewhat like Whole Foods. I should use coupons to cut that figure down more though.

Thank you, Nora Dunn. I've tried this myself and while it didn't directly lead to an epiphany, I noticed having written down what gets me going kept those things near the top of my mind which helped me later on.

I myself was a longtime sufferer of "what to do with my life" and I've created a podcast about people trying to live the lives they want to live called Prologue Profiles. If you're interested here's the link: http://prologueprofiles.com

I'd love to hear what you think.

  • Tips for Finding Legitimate Work-From-Home Opportunities   13 years 42 weeks ago

Thanks for the information! Cause finding a legitimate work at home isn't a easy job job when you are a newbie! I came across a lot of scams before I found the one I am in now! Lost a lot of money too! But I got a lot more with this new online job! So I want to encourage you to first take a good look around on the net and read reviews about the different work at homes and then choose of the confidential ones!

  • Ask the Readers: Have You Ever Attended a Business Conference?   13 years 42 weeks ago

I've attended several conferences over the years. I know people say it's a great way to network, but I've never found the 'connections' to last more than a month or so. I found better connections made when I was a presenter at a conference. I was able to connect better with people and spoke with them after my presentation. I was also introduced to several people afterwards by some who attended my presentation. I highly recommend it - even if you're terrified of speaking in public. I am - and I've done it several times now. I'm still terrified, but I do enjoy sharing knowledge

  • Ask the Readers: Should College Students Have a Credit Card?   13 years 42 weeks ago

I say yes. I had a credit card right when i turned 18. It came in handy for emergencies. I would like to note that i have no credit card debt. I do not understand why people assume that just having a card leads to debt. Also i do not understand cosigned cards. Its not hard to get a low limit card by yourself without your parents. Really its not rocket science to not end up in serious debt. Sure occasionally something will come up where you NEED to use the card without having the money already in the bank. (Like when you pop a tire and need a new one, or when the refrigerator/toilet breaks) but really its not that bad. If you have to use the card you simply budget for paying back the emergency money fast. I do not understand why anyone would think that college students are automatically too stupid to use credit wisely. Iif i could do it in high school im sure any college student could handle a low limit card ($500 seems reasonable)

  • What Americans Can Learn From How the Rest of the World Saves Energy   13 years 42 weeks ago

This article is on point. I lived in Barcelona, Spain for 3 months and it really opened my eyes to how the rest of the world had more disdain for what we are doing to the planet than American's do. In Barcelona, there are recycling bins on every street corner- and not just one for everything There are about 5 different ones, color coded for glass, paper, plastic, food and regular trash. We also didn't have a dryer or dishwasher in our apartment. Although initially we were shocked and a bit angry at the extra effort we;d have to put into our everyday lives- it really is the smarter and more economical way to live.

  • Jobs That Offer Free Room and Board   13 years 42 weeks ago

When I was abroad, I met Canadian students who were living in Madrid and working as nanny's for two different families. While they were both provided with living accommodations, one was much happier than the other. This is a great way to make money as well as get a free room/food/vacations (as many families who hire live-in nannies are very wealthy) but if the children are brats, or the family makes you feel as if you are only there to serve them, it could mean a pretty miserable time.
