  • Filler Strategies for Amazon’s Free Super Saver Shipping   13 years 41 weeks ago

Buy something not yet released, and then cancel that item later! Amazon won't charge until the item is actually shipped, so if you get something a few months out, you just have to wait for the items you actually want to ship, and then cancel the one that's not out.

  • How to Avoid (and Treat) Cold Sores   13 years 41 weeks ago

    Hi, Dora,

It's actually really common to get cold sores after seeing the dentist. It's hard to avoid, but sometimes you can convince your dentist to be a little gentler to avoid upsetting the skin around your mouth. I've heard that some people have luck in putting lip balm or Vaseline on first, because the added moisture can help your lips stretch during your exam/cleaning without causing as mush stress to the soft skin.

Another option might be getting a prescription medication and applying it pre-emptively. That's what I do. But you'd have to talk to your doctor.

  • How to Hire an Accountant   13 years 41 weeks ago

Getting to the point where business is so successful that hiring an accountant is necessary is a great thing...

BUT don't discount the need to understand accounting on your own.

The key to financial success is good money management. Without understanding the importance of accounting, good money management is nearly impossible. For example, I know a CEO who landed in bankruptcy because he just handed total control of his finances over to an accountant. Read his story here: http://billysbilling.com/blog/I-never-understood-the-importance-of-Accou....

I'd suggest hiring an accountant who is an excellent communicator (all too many accountants are introverts). Make sure you're always aware of what's going on with your finances. Don't become reckless after securing a reputable accountant.

Stay involved in managing your own wealth!

  • 22 Reasons to Stop Drinking Soda   13 years 41 weeks ago

I know it sounds a bit scary, but I've tried caffeine pills -- NOT diet pills -- straight caffeine, 200 mgs, the amount as in a cup of coffee. You can get them at the drug store. This way, I've only had to deal with one addiction at a time. It has helped.

  • The Best and Worst Things to Buy in September 2012   13 years 41 weeks ago

It seems like a lot of things on this list might be discounted because of back to school. Bedding, jeans, airfare and iPhones and Tablets would all be things that parents and kids would look for when going back to school or moving for college- which makes sense. Things like sunglasses and patio furniture are always going to be on sale at the end of the summer for obvious reasons.

  • 7 Ways to Boost Your Energy and Get More Done   13 years 41 weeks ago

These ways really are the top factors in being more productive and energetic. When you don't move or exercise, you actually feel more sluggish and tired than if you laid on the couch or sat on your computer. When you are active, your energy levels are raised and you actually feel more alive. I always make it a point to leave enough time in the day to clean up my bedroom and the kitchen. When stuff is just everywhere, I feel tense and anxiety like I will need to find time at some point to clean it all up. If you do it as you go, it's a lot easier.

How could i avoid that. I have heard of products based on Aloa vera , but never have tried it. Does anybody had experioence with it?

  • What Americans Can Learn From How the Rest of the World Saves Energy   13 years 41 weeks ago

Since we started living frugally and decided to reduce our bills, we also set up a clothesline in our backyard to dry the clothes. Although it may take hours to dry the clothes but it does not only lower our electric bill but the clothes also smell better. Admittedly, I still use the dryer occassionally, especially dng winter and it is raining outside.

  • 30 Signs That You Were Raised by Frugal Parents   13 years 41 weeks ago

If you still use stick margarine, you save the wrapper to grease a pan, etc before throwing the wrapper away. We rarely went on vacation when I was a child, but when we did visit relatives/go to an amusement park, etc., we ALWAYS packed sandwiches and snacks rather than eat out. Even now, when we go on vacation, we bring food and supplies with us from home that we have accumulated from sales/coupons during the months before so we don't eat out as often, and spend less. You forgot to mention coupon clipping! My dad had a job as a traveling salesman when I was growing up so we did have hotel soaps, routinely used as hand soap before the onslaught of liquid soaps. We still have hotel hand soaps available in the bathroom and kitchen. I buy large containers of mouthwash, shampoo, etc., and transfer them to smaller bottles that I use over and over. Environmentally more friendly too!

Clotheslines are sometimes regulated by homeowners' associations. A lot of HOA's forbid clotheslines because it ruins the look of the neighborhood.
I dry certain clothes on a wooden clothesrack inside my home. While putting up a clothesline outside my apartment isn't really possible, I wouldn't do it even if it were, since my clothes would end up drying with a lot of grime (the drawbacks of living in a borough of NYC).

  • Jobs That Offer Free Room and Board   13 years 41 weeks ago

Just a clarification. A parsonage isn't exactly "free" housing. A pastor pays social security on what the government deems is it's fair market value (commonly 40% of the pastor's cash salary). Since a pastor is "self employed" for social security purposes that's 15.3%. Some states and communities also consider housing as income and tax at their respective rates. However, it is not considered income on federal taxes.
