It mostly comes down to what is best described as an external locus of control, combined with the accessibility only available from a prosperous and generous functional segment of society. Any dispute of the above or further excuse-making is a reflection of that external locus I mentioned.
To everyone thinking about cutting cable, take the plunge. We did it a year ago, and my teenage son and I have never looked back. We started using the free version of Hulu, and get free movies on Crackle, but have never needed to upgrade or add Netflix. We do go to the local $1.50 about every other month. Redbox is a big hit for us, esp with ample codes available for free/reduced rentals. We have a nice DVD collection, so that helps bridge the occasional entertainment gap. Living in a good sized city is a bonus, as there are lots of things to do on a limited entertainment budget.
You raised another excellent point, Philip. Thank you.
I will add another reason as to why we should always save money – it will help us to develop the savings habit, which is critical to build wealth. As what will make or break us financially is our money habits, it is critical for us to develop and then maintain the habit of saving money. And this must be done regardless of what happens in the outside world: low interest rate, recession, deflation or even wars.
I've been picking up lost change and recycling the cans that we got from pop on sale. Since having a little one on the way I decided to save one dollar bills. So far it isn't to hard.
Remember that most restaurant portions are at least double what most of us should eat!!! One of the best deals in most sit-down restaurants is the typical appetizer sampler - usually more than enough for a full meal for two and averaging $12 - $20. Drinks are, by FAR, the most expensive item on every menu. We often get the Grande Fajita Nachos at On The Border and it is plenty for dinner for both of us, plus lunch for one of us the next day. If you forgo the drink and just enjoy the food and the company, you'll save a lot, often HALF the bill. Look for the places in your area that have coupons, specials, happy hour prices and take advantage of them. Again, these can often save you half of what you would otherwise spend for the exact same menu items.
My first choice is always to see if I can find a new way to use it. Empty ice cream buckets hold four, sugar, instant mashed potatoes, pasta, etc. Clothing that isn't usable for anything else is always good for the rag bag - everyone used to have one. If the mess you clean up with a rag isn't TOO bad, you wash it and reuse it. If it is really horrible, you just throw the rag away - at least the fabric has done it's duty at least twice rather than wasting paper. Nearly any clothing item can be remade into some other piece of clothing; turning a pair of pants into a skirt is super simple, larger items can be taken in or refashioned for someone smaller or for children. If you have the energy to put one together a garage sale is great - I don't have either the time or patience but there are many charities that will pick almost anything up at your door and make the stuff available to someone else who wants or desperately needs it whether it be sold in a thrift store or given to a battered woman trying to make a fresh start. In short, all it takes to keep almost anything out of the trash dump is a little creative thinking.
I could do without dining out. Lately it has been a big drag on my finances. Plus, for what I pay for in a restaurant, I can make healthier more flavorful meals at home, better planning and less laziness!
I found the 314159 solution above works for more than one LG version.

Any WWII veteran, physicist, or someone who lived through the great depression knows the answer to this one. Use as much hot water on your face as you want. This makes the bristles stand up for a closer shave so that's good but never rinse a razor blade in any water that is not as cold as it can possibly be.
When rinsing the blade in warm/hot water the blade undergoes expansion followed by a contraction back to its normal size as the blade goes from hot back to normal temperature again. This makes the edge dull perhaps because the hot water softens the metal.
When rinsing with only cold water the blade goes in the other direction by contraction first and then expansion back to its normal size as the temperature goes from cold back to normal temperature again. This does not dull the edge.
With blades these days it is even worse. Hot or even warm water will soften the polymer coating on the blade. Then when the blade expands because of the warm or hot water the polymer stretches. When it contracts again not only is the edge dull but the polymer is all wrinkled up which effectively makes the blade seem even more dull. This happens pretty much instantly and is great for companies who manufacture razor blades because the consumer has to replace the blade sooner.
To test this, lather and shave only half your face with a new razor (be sure to always rinse it in very cold water). When finished this side of your face, rinse the razor several times while changing the temperature of the water from hot to cold. Now lather and shave the other side of your face. If you do not immediately notice that the blade is now more dull you will for sure notice the next time you use the razor. Mine usually last until the wife takes them in the shower. I have had some blades stay perfectly sharp for at least a few years of daily shaving.
As for the temperature of the water that you use on your face that is a personal preference but if you want your blades to last considerably longer they must never touch anything other than cold water.
Being unemployed after college I managed to collect some crazy debt. I was making the minimun payments but that didn't make any dent. So I went back to working retail after not being able to find a career job. And made my plan. They were all pretty bad, so I started small since my paycheck was very small and paid the minimum balance EVERY paycheck. $27 here, $19 there, $31 here, ect every two weeks. And I started seeing some inprovement. Then I got a better paying job. Stayed at retail and directed those paychecks into savings. Working 7 days a week trying to pay off that debt. I threw my tax return to kill one and a half cards and then refocused that money to pay off the other cards. I'll be down to 1 card left in a matter of 4 paychecks. And from there, I think It'll be between 3 and 4 paychecks before thats done. I can only taste being far far away from credit cards.
My husband and i are current card holders of netspend. and i will say that that is very weird that they did that to you. they havent done that to us, or anyone else that we know of that uses netspend. this is the first i have heard of negative things regarding them. i have alot of pre paid cards, because of my mom stealing my identity when i was a child i use and apply for them to help raise and fix my credit. and in order for me and my husband to get a net spend card we had to go online to apply and even then i had to google pre paid cards.
i will say out of all of them i like netspend the best, as long as i dont have to deal with there customer service. and i never call to check my balance, i go online. plus i really like how for every person i refer that gets and uses the card one time, i not only receive $20, but they also receive $20. quick way for me to make some money. lol i am disabled and due to surgerys and what not that i have had and am about to have, my doctors wont allow me to get a job at this time. boy i cant wait to go back to school!!! well i hope that if you ever do apply for a pre paid car in the future you find the best ones that suit you. i also have an account now card, a green dot car, a buy right card, and a RUSH card. those are probably the only pre paid services i would ever tell any one else to try. i also enjoy the fact of netspend that if i dont use the card, i dont get charged. account now wont charge you a monthly fee if you dont use it either. but i am sorry for yours and your husband bad experince. i will say netspends customer service is the worst. but they do have some service reps that are good. well i wish you a good night. :-)
It is always worth it forcing yourself to be a morning person! However, it is sometimes nice to also sleep in as late as you want at least once a week. :)
Yeah none of those tricks ever work. Windows open, shut, blinds open or shut, fans on or off, it gets just as hot in this house as it does outside. Hotter even, and it stays hot long after nightfall.
Leave it to the Scoutmaster to come up with something handy! Off to check the pantry for instant oatmeal. I don't even think I'd feel guilty eating this. Mahalo!
Dang, I should do this, especially with regard to the aforementioned bananas. That's a good one, and then I'd have it right there. And yeah, that having a whole cake in the house is a bad idea. Been there! That is why I cannot make Texas Sheet Cake anymore, ever.
Food? Water? Just kidding. There's plenty in my budget that I could live without, starting with cell phones. I could eliminate Internet service, cable television, my automobile in favor of public transportation. I could easily cut my grocery budget by a third or half by only buying real food and no processing, prepackaged junk. I could slash my budget by skipping dining out altogether. I could further cut my budget by becoming a vegetarian (meat is expensive and not especially healthy for you anyway). I could eliminate buying toothpaste in favor of a big box of baking soda, which actually works well. I could go to the dentist every other year instead of yearly, and do well there, too. I could cease watering my useless lawn, which is immortal anyway. That's just for starters.
Did not wait for an answer. Went ahead and tried the soda, boiling water, and aluminum foil on my silver plated serving. It worked like a dream. I am still in shock at how easy and fast it was and how clean it came. The detail came out clean also. I think there is a difference in patenia and tarnish and I wanted the tarnish off.
We do something i called "Hot Cookie Dough" in a mug...
1) take 2 pkg of instant oatmeal (if for just me..or else i make a small pot of regular oatmeal for the family)..Add spoonfull of nuts, chocolate chips, brown sugar (your fav. cookie add-ins) mix well, add the called for hot water. LET SIT ONE FULL MINUTE. stir & enjoy...
Bonus points: Safer & Lower calories than "real" cookie dough, No eggs, No flour
I took a couple of trips recently where internet access and cell phone service were both severely limited, and it was AWESOME -- so relaxing! Conversely, on one of those trips, the moment we got Wi-Fi, everyone hopped on their phones and conversation died. I've been trying to remain more aware of my tech usage since then.

Me and my girlfriends are SO going to do this!

Please explain the issues you had with buying a house with cash. I'm in the process of doing this and I will appreciate the heads up.

Kate, thanks for this wonderful suggestion. In our humidity, I hate it when I finally do bake a batch and they just go all soggy on me. :-)
Mrs. Pop, my husband grows bananas, and we have sooooo many! THANK YOU for this tip! I can't wait to try it.
