Great article Linsey. A note too about "hobby trips" is that I would expand this to amusement park trips. Not only are the prices at the gate for some places (not Disneyland!) such as the San Diego Zoo, or the Monterey Bay Aquarium, very reasonable, but you can get even better discounts if you know where to look. For amusement parks, Costco Travel runs pretty good deals and even to Universal Studios Hollywood right now you can get a 2-day pass for $64 per person. Not too shabby for two days of fun!
We buy them at large department stores during special sales. There are plenty of discount stores that offer a wide variety of toys. It's a good idea to look for durable, educational toys that don't require batteries.
Thanks for the comment. I think you'll find people will be more supportive of your efforts than you thought (and yes, because they know they should be doing the same). Hope it works for you!
I recently got a puppy and I bring her to work each day. She helps everyone in my office relieve their stress...and I'm guaranteed a nice walk in the afternoon!
We're in-between parents...the oldest is a teenager, so we wait for sales (and save up) for the digital things he wants. The youngest is 9 months. So far, we've just kept his toys simple & to a minimum.
Just found this recipe (thanks Pinterest) and tried it this morning. Used craisins and added 1 egg, a few additional rolled oats and a little brown sugar. Cooked them approx 18mins so they were dark brown on the undersides and a little crunchy when cooled. My 2yr old has been asking for "cookies" all day - he LOVES them! Will definitely be trying a bar version soon. Nice to have a quick, healthy go-to snack that we all enjoy. THANKS!
Very cool worksheet! I have a great running budget spreadsheet that shows me what I've got to work with, but this planning worksheet was really eye-opening. At least I feel like I am on the right track for an early retirement! I love to play with the numbers and see how the totals change, too. Thanks for that!
I make sure that I do something, anything with my family after work. It's hard to be stressed about a report or meeting when you are pushing your two-year old on the swing. I also go to the park near my work and just sit there. No book, no cell phone, just sit. I usually feel refreshed in about 15 minutes.
Don't rely on this list as tax advice, several of these are flat out wrong. Just as an example, a cash based business can never write off unpaid invoices as an expense. Spending money (expense) and not making money (unpaid bill) are very different things.
When I'm stuck in a rut. I do two things; examine every aspect of my life from when I get up in the morning to what I do in the car on the way to work and look for things I can change. The second thing I do is think deep about all the things I want to do, both grand things I want for my family and career and little fun things that I've kept on the back burner. Then I just try to see if I can make it happen.
I definetly need to call my mom more. #5 and 7 intrigue and scare me a little, but hell, why not? Sleeping the nude is very liberating especially on a hot summer night (I live in FL). Please tip big one day. I tipped a server huge once (I had a per diem for business travel) and the gratitude she expressed was a tremendous feeling. Lastly, always be mindful of what you are thankful for. It's really the root of hapiness.
Craigslist can't be beat. It's not worth it to make one trip for 1 toy, so I look for the scenario where one household posts several listings. I then ask if I can purchase a whole lot of them at a discounted rate. Most households happily oblige. =)
I have always been interested in WWOOF (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms). You pick the destination/farm and for one-half day of volunteer help you receive food and accommodation! Therefore the only substantial cost would be getting there.
Great inspirational post! I've always been afraid of public speaking and have always thought about joining Toastmasters...today's the day to take action!

Isn't the prescription one insurance fraud?

Great article, I love it. Also a lovely beach in the back ground.
We rely heavily on hand me down toys...especially.the big ones like power wheels and bikes from friends and family.
Hand-me-downs and ebay!

I've heard of it and thought it sounded interesting. My kids are 13, 8, 7, 5, and 2, so maybe when they get a bit older?
