I find that a few days without a really good night's sleep throws everything off: I'm moodier, I'm more forgetful, hard time concentrating, etc. You just really feel like something's not right.
I also read somewhere that every half hour you sleep before midnight is the equivalent of 2 hours of sleep after midnight. So, the earlier you get to bed, the more real sleep your body gets to repair itself.
All of this points to the very messages i have heard for years being preached in the Christian church. One money, one world order and control of the people to the point they have no freedoms left. Yes in deed it can and will happen sooner or later, unfortunately. It is prophecy as i see and it is happening little by little right before our eyes. I suggest people get ready, Jesus is coming, soon we will be going home!
We have a kitty alarm clock who seems to be more aligned to the sun than anything else. All that I can say is I'm glad I live in san diego, where it gets light at 6am, and not england where it seems to be light really super early in the summer!
I have a friend who tells me everyday that he's tired because he only slept 2 hours, or haven't slept at all in the last 24 hours. And then goes on and on about how his sleeping pattern is so weird. Man, "give it a REST!"
I don't use alarm clocks anymore. I've found that by going to bed at a decent hour at night, I wake up at the same time every morning. I can even wake up earlier on my own if I "tell my body" I need to wake up earlier. It's very crazy how well our bodies respond when we treat it well.
I was just writing a related post, Sarah, when I read this one. Thank you! I find that a lot of people get too little sleep as sort of a badge of honor. I'm not talking about people with insomnia, but about the ones who stay up late doing nothing (or, occasionally, work) and get up early, mainly so they can tell everyone within earshot that they only got two hours of sleep last night.
It's not worth it. Sometimes I hate that we sleep for 1/3 of our lives, but god, sleep is so nice.
Radio Lab had a really cool story about sleep, sleep disorders, and animals that can allow on half of the brain to rest while the other stays awake.
I heartily agree that Vegas is one of the cheapest vacations you can go on! We go every year! Free drinks everywhere, and free or cheap food up and down the strip...you just have to look for it. When we went, our motto was "eat on the 12's"...we would fill up at the hotel lunch buffet at noon ($5.99 all u can eat)...then, from midnight until 5am, the restaurant in our hotel had a 99 cent menu! COMPLETE breakfast of 2 eggs, hash browns, bacon or sausage, toast, juice...for 99 cents! So, we ate our 2nd meal of the day between those hours! Who sleeps in Vegas anyway?? And, just walking through the various hotels is like visiting free museums all day!
Dear Funkright. Paul rewrote his story and republished it under a new title thanks to the good advice from you and E.T. Cook. The new post was published with this explanation at the end:
"Note: Thank you to funkright and E.T.Cook for pointing out that my earlier post offered one piece of irresponsible advice. I appreciate the feedback and have replaced it with something more helpful."
I hope you take that note as a compliment and a "thank you" for your continuing efforts to help us improve Wise Bread.
If you have further questions feel free to contact me at admin (a_t) wisebread dot com.
We removed the follow-up comments because they made no sense without the original article. Myself and a WB editor added extra verbiage at the end of the post giving credit to both yourself and ET Cook for pointing out an irresponsible part of the story (did you not read this?). If I had left that part of the story up, wouldn't that have been more irresponsible? Please tell us exactly what else we could have done, and we'll try and accomodate your request.
Good list! I highly recommend the sewing and knitting thing, too. Especially sewing. It's amazing what you can do with even limited skill in that realm.
I saw the original post and comments, but I don't think you're marginalized. I also think the original post was good, and people are too sensitive and prissy about stuff. But maybe that's just me.
removing the follow up comments from the original article posting w/o some type of explanation has pretty much marginalized your site, at least IMO. Good luck (I expect this to be removed as well)
Our Goodwill picks out all the good stuff and sells it all once a year at their big 'glitter sale'. It's still a great deal, but nothing like $1 for a pair of vintage designer sunglasses. They've gotten very wise to that kind of thing. If they see something that's worth anything, they squirrel it away, and when they do sell it, they make a hefty profit.
Growing your own veggies is such a great experience. And it's so easy!
(Thanks for linking to my weeds article. I'm blushing)
Andrea, WRITING IN CURSIVE IS EVIL. Particularly to those of us who had slow-developing fine motor skills and weren't ready to write in cursive in 2nd grade, and who then moved to another city, where they taught crusive in 3rd grade, but still weren't ready, so struggled through 2 YEARS of cursive classes only to discover NO ONE USES IT.
So yeah, this one career thing? Something like that. But they can't fool me now! (insert evil laugh here).
I am almost 30 (this coming December). I've had 10 different jobs since 18 years old. Granted, most of those jobs either overlap or were fulltime/parttime combos. I'm sick of working for someone, yet I don't want to own a retail store, or something where I have employees. I want to be my own boss.
I'm a "victim" of countless "work-at-home" scams. Too many than I care to admit, including Herbalife. There's no such thing as loyalty in the workplace anymore.
I was told when I was around 20, that my generation would have on average 7 career changes and about 20-25 job changes in our lifetime. I've had 10 jobs and 4 career changes in 12 years. I don't wanna know what the other half is gonna be like. I want to start my own business on the side at first that I can roll into something that will replace any other job I might have.
It's weird to be thinking that a LOT of people want to go into business for themselves. I am a night person, and prefer to go to bed around 3 or 4 AM and wake up around 10AM. Not business-friendly at all! LOL.
Good luck with your endeavors and I have a feeling you'll do fine in whatever you choose!
I've been drinking a lot of tea lately so this definitely comes in handy. Thanks Andrea!
i have a ultra violet machine may be expensive but saves for long ter repeat usage

I dunno about number 10. As a long time knitter and sewer, I think they've cost me more money than I've saved. :)
Rather ironic that the ads on this post are for sleep aids (except for the baby timer).
People who can function well on little sleep annoy me, but mostly because I can't. And because they like to talk about it. To me. When I'm tired.

From #4 on down, you pretty much outlined the whole of frugal living!
You may have to send me your complete guide to doing Vegas for pennies. I know it's a frugal vacationer's dream, I just don't know where to start.

It takes a bit of work, but I'm sure seeing the final accelerated payoff is worth it. =)

Thanks, slayerboy. And good luck to you, as well.

Dreamhost has a 1-click install. Makes the "5 minute install" even easier. Pretty cool.
Lucky for us, we can all benefit from Sarah's experimentation and research. So stay tuned!
Andrea, they made me learn how to use the abacus. Talk about LIES!
I think the second one will be very popular at Lord of the Rings conventions. =)
With this information I think a lot of bloggers can use this info to expand their web presence beyond just a daily journal. Good post!
I concur this is a great list. Keep it up...
