Thanks for the comment, Rebecca! My grandmother is super cute, but the picture is just a representation. I'm not sure she'd be comfortable having her face in print!

Thanks for the really insightful post, and of course thanks to your grandmother for sharing her wisdom about decisions. The first tip: be grateful we have decisions to make really resonates with me: I often experience an "anguish of freedom" (Satre I think), when faced with choice. In reality, none of the options I am faced with would be bad, which takes away much of the stress about it.

I still agonise over big decisions, with hours of research and list-writing, but I have tried to reduce my decision-effort for smaller decisions. Often a decision is much better than no decision, with that in mind - pick one and accept it with no regrets. I think this idea is particularly important for those in leadership roles: providing leadership means, in part, having (or being seen to have) that deliberate and strong sense of direction.

  • How About a Price List at the Hospital or Doctor’s Office?   14 years 42 weeks ago

Don't forget the sticker shock for prescriptions, and the often completely muddled insurance (if you are lucky) coverage for same, including $200 deductibles, copays, generic price differentials, all of which the physician who writes the scripts cares little if nothing about....

Great job on getting your cholesterol down! Never easy to make lifestyle changes, but they pay huge rewards!

  • Are You Frugal or Cheap?   14 years 42 weeks ago

I was wondering where you would differentiate between frugal and cheap, and I think that saving at someone else's expense on purpose (particularly a good friend or family member) is a great example.

I saw traits of the "cheap" quite a bit during college, and now even after college, and have been trying to pay attention to my own habits in order to avoid going overboard with the "Save, save, save!" mentality.

  • Mogi's Extended Vehicle Protection: Is it Worth It?   14 years 42 weeks ago

Well, i was also skeptical about Mogi, but then my GTO V8 engine had some problem, and they helped me fix it without chrage. the only catch was that they wanted me to have the engine opened at my cost incase they dont pass the failure. I had it done and they replaced my engine with a used one,, and the car is doing just fine.. i m a mogi customer and i was happy and surprised how mogi got it done. it takes a lot of patience as there lines keep u on hold for 45 mins and all... but at the end it paid of.

  • How to Make Moonshine   14 years 42 weeks ago

Thanks Zorcy for the relpy, after looking at it again it looks like just corn meal. Today is day 7 and it is almost done like you said. It is clearing up and is only bubbling every minute or so. I have another question:

I made another batch last night and screwed it up royaly! I have 5 gallon glass jugs my dad used to make wine out of, I wanted to make a 5 gallon batch; well I did not acount for space at the bottom the meal would take up. Long story short tell me if I need to start over or not.

I mixed 8lbs sugar, 5 lbs WHITE corn meal ( I failed to tell my wife yellow) does this make a difference? and 4 gallons of distilled water instead of 5 and 1 pack of turbo yeast from my local brew shop. I woke up this morning and it blew the air lock off and had crap everywere. I put it back on shook it up a little and put it back to work. Is this batch ruined or can it be saved

Thanks again and Happy New Year!

I'm not vegetarian, but I did go a full year without eating meat some time back, and the recipe below is one that I devoured often. If you aren't a fan of tofu, cooked chicken would sub in nicely, I imagine.

    TOFU CASSEROLE WITH MUSHROOMS

1 ½ tsp butter or margarine
    1 lb. sliced mushrooms
    1 chopped onion
    2 ¼ cloves garlic
    3 oz. uncooked brown rice
1 ½ cups blanched broccoli florets
    ¾ lb. extra firm tofu
    ¾ cups skim milk
    1 ½ tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
    3/8 tsp @ nutmeg, salt & pepper
    ¾ tsp red pepper flakes
    3 oz. grated cheddar

    Instructions:
    1. sauté mushrooms in butter with garlic and onions, cook until tender
    2. place rice in bottom of 2 quart baking dish
    3. top with mushroom/onion mixture
    4. add broccoli and tofu
    5. mix milk with Worcestershire, salt, pepper, nutmeg and red pepper flakes; pour over casserole
    6. top with cheddar
    7. cover with foil and bake 350 for 1 hr or until rice is tender
    8. uncover and bake 5 more minutes

(Taste great with purple glutinous rice if you can find it)

    Bon appetit!!

  • How to Make Moonshine   14 years 42 weeks ago

    Brian,
Are you sure the sugar is sitting on the bottom? If it is, stir it up. If you have some way to warm it up, that would make it go faster. The drawbacks to faster, is the extra flavours it leaves behind. If there is no sugar, let it keep bubbling. It should be almost done. You can taste it, should not have any sweetness to it as it nears completion.

  • 11 Simple Rules of Excellent Houseguest Etiquette   14 years 42 weeks ago

I agree with you. I have someone that is my significants other's son who for the last four years shows up for weeks of a time and won't even buy a 12 pack of beer when he stays at my house not hers.... Its always when mom has opening day baseball tickets or play off tickets. We always argue about this to no avail. My daughter visits less often and she always treats us to a home cooked meal and a night out. At least I raised my daughter the right way.
