Cleaning cats? I've always operated under the assumption cats are like self-cleaning ovens and have only bathed my cats when I took in ferral newborns that had fleas. I would have never second guessed my choice in not bathing them, but I am glad that I am right. Poor kitties that get regular baths. I can't even imagines.
Yes, I totally agree, as a 2nd year university student I've learnt alot throughout this past year re financing and credit scoring. I got into some financial difficulties and unfortunately I couldn't ask my parents for assistance so I decided to take out a car title loan, which turned out for the best, really! Now I'm doing my best in planning the monthly spending, going into all the small expenses, and even managing to save a bit :)
If you keep a $1000 float in your checking, you won't ever have overdraft fees. You shouldn't be having to micromanage your checking account just to keep from getting overdrafts!
Shampooing your hair BAD IDEA..You are washing away the sebum produced by the sebachias Gland,,(Spelled wrong ,I know)Sebum is natures way of oiling the hair root .By shampooing every day the Gland gets tired replacing the Sebum and GIVES UP.....Guess What? Good bye hair ..Hello BALDIE ..So every morning put your head under the shower and let the hot water run through it while you massage it,,,NO SOAP of ANY kind OK? You can ADD conditioners etc That's ADD But no SHAMPOO or SOAP ever..I promise you will keep your hair Not lose it..
The worst mistake I made was blowing a large portion of the inheritance I received when I turned 18. DO NOT GIVE 18-YEAR-OLDS LARGE INHERITANCES!!!! :/ I was in a particularly vulnerable place at 18, and while I am proud of some of the decisions I made with the money, such as giving some of it away and buying my first car in cash, it kills me to think of how foolishly I spent most of it. I would do things much differently now if I had the chance!
We bought our house just before the market went down. Even though we weren't under water, its value is just now getting back up to what we paid for it.
Being required to cash in two retirement IRAs in order to be able to finance a down payment on my first house. Bad move. But one I couldn't avoid.
I often try to counsel young folks to think hard about starting an IRA and sticking with it, but very few of them pay heed. They think they're invincible and will be able to keep working. Not so. The American system is not structured to make full use of all employable people. We are not that enlightened yet.
So save, and save often. Putting away small amounts in an IRA early in your career can pay off big.
Used a debt settlement company to pay off my debt. I signed up four account to be settled by the the debt settlement company. I went from pay a little bit on each account to not paying for six months. The debt settlement company collected my money and delayed payment to my credit cards. It took me less time o settle 3 of my accounts on my own than for the debt settlement company to pay off one account and taking a nice chunk for their commission.
I am no longer in debt except for student loans and my car but my credit score is in the dumps
Interesting piece. Can't say I've heard #9 before. I've also heard its not healthy to wash your hair everyday but rather ever couple days instead. Meg, have you heard this as well? How often does everyone else wash their hair?
I've found it easier to add info than to delete it. I've made up names, address, etc and these sites happily add them to their data base. It also can give one an idea of where some of their info comes from. I think I should become a CEO for Ginnie Mae next!
I had a boatload of Apple stock at $9 share and I sold it at $75..
The second worst thing I did is create a spreadsheet showing myself how much money I lost!
I didn't read anything here about vitamins but that is what has made a HUGE difference for me. I used to get at least one cold sore a month that would range from very mild to very horrific. I started taking Multi vitamins and extra Vitamin C for an exercise program I was on and after a while I noticed I wasn't getting any cold sores any more. I think my body was just deficient on nutrients and my immune system wasn't functioning at its prime.
For the past three years I've been taking a good multi vitamin and 1000 mg of Vitamin C religously every day and I've barely had any cold sores. Really the only time I've gotten any was when I was traveling for work for a week and forgot my vitamins and even those were very mild compared to the past. Also I haven't had a cold or the flu in the past three years whereas I used to get those periodically as well.
Also I used to notice that I would get cold sores the day after I would play racketball really hard. Eventually I realized I was sweating out all my electrolytes and depriving my immune system of nutrients so I made my own electrolyte soup. Bottle of water, teaspoon of sea salt, 1 tablet each of magnesium, zinc, calcium, 3 tablets of potassium. let sit for a few hours then shake. Drink right after working out. Doesn't taste bad and you feel better immediately. And no cold sores. :-)
Realistically they are super expensive and almost always have terrible financial return on investment. With that said, they are far from a terrible investment and worth every penny.
On more normal terms, not investing sooner, both retirement and personal accounts. Buying a house just after the peak of the market and losing about 25%.
i planned a recent vacation to Europe with a holiday company called Travelopod. Was able to save some bucks vs bigger players like expedia. But definitely i wish I had read these tips too :( would have saved so much more!
These are great ideas! You make a great comment about watching hotel costs with free breakfast, but if the price is close, it is worth it. I have a family of 5, and breakfast can get costly quickly. We have definitely brought out own and put it in the minifridge as you suggested, but sometimes eating a hearty breakfast in the hotel that can include some healthy options like fresh fruit helps keep lunch cheaper later.

I miss playing in the creek. That was free and we spent hours there.

For hair, there's something called a zip that works really great.
I've learned that most plumbing, at least with CPVC, is like Legos with glue, and PEX is even easier. :) I used to be scared of it--but no longer!
My grandma gave me my KitchenAid when I got married. I love it!

The Atlas mason jars that Classico is sold in have changed design and now feature a smaller lid. I'm not sure you can actually can with them anymore.

My money mistake was cashing in my 401K everytime I left a job.

My worst money mistake was not starting investing earlier in my life!

Great line! Good article too.

Not paying off our school loans as quickly as possible when we had the money.

Having kids...

That was our error, Reza -- thanks for the catch!
