  • 25 Frugal Things I Do, 4 Spendthrift Confessions   16 years 10 weeks ago

I recycle everything.  I print on both sides of the paper, I save takeout containers instead of buying Tupperware, I trap water in sinks and shower to use on my thirsty garden.  I buy a $25 coupon on www.Restaurant.com when they go on sale for two bucks, and bring my own wine.  I buy all my clothing at thrift stores and yard sales, and even find trendy labels to sell on eBay.  Lots more frugalista tips in my book, BARGAIN JUNKIE: LIVING THE GOOD LIFE ON THE CHEAP.

I am motivated by the sense of accomplishment. I find that a raise (while nice!) without constructive compliments on my work is not motivating. I want to be acknowledged for my accomplishements.

Knowing that in about a year (good lord willin' and the creeks don't rise) I am moving from New York to Florida and will be within 20 minutes of my 2 grandsons...to think about being able to watch them grow and prosper keeps my mind young and my heart strong!

  • How to get half-price dining from your local TV station.   16 years 10 weeks ago

I beleive that IncentRev should take some responsibility for these certificates if a business closes.  My co-workers and myself are very loyal to this business and buy numerous certificates.  The wild wing cafe closed and left me with over $200.00 with certificates that are of no use to anyone.  I understand that you can't be responsible for any restaurant that closes,  but you should still have the decency to take the coupons off the "for sale" list when the restarant is closed.  I bought these and they were shipped to me, then the next day a few of us went there to eat and what do you know?  The doors were locked!  This should be considered fraud but since you have it in your statement that you are not responsible for closed restarants, you get by with it.  Just have the common decency to at least refund half of the charges.  This kind of business is making everyone here think hard and twice before ordering any more of thes from anywhere.  All we ask is that you just be fair, nothing more.

What often gets me through tough days/projects is caffeine! :) But I also remind myself that if I roll up my sleeves and tackle what needs to be done then I will be DONE. The sooner I finish something the sooner I can relax! I do what I need to do in order to have the life I want for my family and me. Of course I have tired, lazy days when I truly don't feel like accomplishing anything, but if I think of my family and how great it is to feel secure and happy then I power through.

  • Principal Forgiveness: The New BofA Mortgage Deal   16 years 10 weeks ago

There is some talk about principal forgiveness for Wells Fargo borrowers; however, it looks like loans to be modified are the problematic ones such as the pick-a-pay (or pay option) loans or other types in which unpaid interest is added to the loan balance. If you have a traditional, fixed rate loan -- based  on the current deals -- it looks unlikely that those loans would be modified or principal forgiven. One of the lawsuits against Countrywide provided for relocation assistance but again, it depends on the type of loan.

A few ideas:  If your house has gone down in value, see if you can get your tax office to lower its valuation so that the property tax (which is most likely part of your payment) could be reduced as well as your monthly escrow and loan payment. Also, since you work in law enforcement and may be a public servant, look into special programs such as a forgiveness of student loans, special financing rates, or even special rates in homeowners insurance that may be available to public servants -- anything to reduce the monthly expenses.

  • Principal Forgiveness: The New BofA Mortgage Deal   16 years 10 weeks ago

My mortgage is not with BofA, (its with Wells Fargo) and I wish it were. I'm a recently divorced and struggling wth making my $1100 per month mortgage payments (interest 6.75). I did not qualify for a refinance at a lower rate because my credit score is 660 (dont ask why) or one that will make any real difference without a ton of up-front costs. I have two teenagers (13/15) and an elderly mother to care for. My job in law enforcement is about $48,000 gross. I have a ton of student debt (90's high interest loans with penalties). Because I have not missed payments, I am not eligible for any of these programs. I purchased my current home with double the salary in 2007 and now its worth about 35,000 less than what I paid for it. My lender talked about a short sale, but even that leaves me with no $ to move if it does sell (unlikely). So what can I do?

  • How to Make Moonshine   16 years 10 weeks ago

I've "seen" an nifty filter for a still. It involves using a cartridge type water filter- like for a refrigerator ice maker.  Attach it to the 3/8" copper tube used as a condenser coil, and attach another short tube as a spout out the other end.  Make sure the water filter is filled with carbon- the one I've "seen" is a solid carbon block, but some filters use granulated carbon.  Should work too.  Best to run some water thru the filter, "I'm told" to remove any carbon dust before using it on a still...  Also- either use a thumper or make real sure your still doesn't boil over, as any solids coming out of the still may plug up the water filter.  One thing that hasn't been mentioned here (as far as I can see) is the safety factor of sealing your still to prevent leaks, but do not make it impossible for the lid to blow off.  I've "seen" a still made from a 3 gallon steel stock pot with the lid sealed using weatherstripping.  The lid is held to the pot with the use of spring clamps - about 12 of them around the entire circumference of the lid.  That allows the still to seal under normal distilling pressures, but will blow the clamps off and release pressure if the pressure builds to dangerous levels.  Enjoy-

  • 10 Ways to Cut Waste When Feeding Kids   16 years 10 weeks ago

My only caveat to the "let the dog have the scraps" is to watch out for things the dog shouldn't have.  Raisins and grapes are know to cause kidney failure in dogs.  As such, I watch those items like a hawk on my kids' plates.

Also, if you don't have livestock to eat the scraps, consider composting.  At least you can recycle the stuff that's not humanly edible anymore (meats don't compost well, but veggies, fruits and grains do!)

  • Who Should Face the Music When the Banks Fail?   16 years 10 weeks ago

Agree with Kim - but in a different capacity.  Grant's idea tries to find a single scapegoat when there are many parties involved.

There are other ways to severely restrict future earnings or seek out punitive action, but the only way it would even make sense to attack personal earnings would be if you took back all of the income from that job from that bank which was run into the ground.

The re-integration part is often overlooked.  I've had numerous friends (including myself) who have gone through withdrawal upon return.

These were only multiple month long trips, but I can only imagine the longer you stay abroad - the harder/more difficult it becomes to re-integrate yourself.

  • 10 Ways to Cut Waste When Feeding Kids   16 years 10 weeks ago

Some great ideas.  Love your writing but this is the first email link I've received in a while.  Glad it made it through!

My daughter's speech therapists have told me that drinking with a straw is a "higher skill" than a sippy as well as more age appropriate.   If you are struggling with a toddler who's clinging to his past, I would go with the straw to prevent spills.

My 3 year old does spill once every two weeks or so.  We moved him slowly to the open cup (started in the bath), only fill it about half way to reduce waste if he spills, and have worked very hard on teaching him how and where to set the cup down after each drink. He does really well with this, and I figure him learning to prevent and clean up his spills is part of the life lesson. If he spills, we tell him why but don't get excited "you were playing and spilled your milk" etc...

I don't agree with open ended choices -  I prefer to give a choice between 2 items.  When my toddlers go in and out of their food hating phases (no green, no touching, no dip) I have always insisted on putting a little of the hate du jour on their plates.  Just a small amount - two green beans is not the end of the world. I don't make them eat it, but they have learned to stop the drama and deal with having to look at a food they don't like.

Kids do switch on and off dislikes. I never know when they will suddenly start eating a food again. My son has taken food breaks that have lasted as long as 18 months! I would never have known he was ready to try again if I didn't keep putting a little of everything on his plate.

My son just turned 3 and I have a 4 1/2 year old daughter with Special Needs.  For months now, I have been letting them serve themselves from a serving dish.  I'm teaching them to take a small amount then get more once they have eaten the first portion.

I also bought them nylon knives to help them prepare more food and have started Muffin Tin Mondays.  Making meals fun and different made a bigger difference than I expected. I haven't blogged about the knives yet (love them!) but here's a link to Muffin Tin Mondays:

    http://www.able2able.com/2010/04/muffin-tin-monday.html

They are finally getting to the point where being involved in the kitchen encourages better eating - hooray!  For the longest time they would help, and handle foods they would not eat, but would not eat the finished product.  Am hoping the new garden will help with the current veggie phobia.
