  • 5 Ways to Live Better Without Spending More   16 years 18 hours ago

When you get your paycheck, cash it and use the "Envelope" system to budget your cash. Write on each envelope the name of an expense, like gasoline, groceries, clothing, eating out, and put the cash allocated for those expenses in the appropriate envelope. When the envelope is empty, that's all you can spend for that month.

    Zorcy,
just made a strawberry liqueur and a pineapple liqueur. Tastes great, but it's a long process with multiple filterings to get them looking anywhere near clear, isn't it?

(Specifically, how many Gap shirts do you have to fold per sip of overpriced java?)

Way to shame retail jobs, Donna. You could have done without that line.

  • School Bookstores Can't Afford Cheap Textbooks   16 years 19 hours ago

Having just graduated, I can relate to the struggle to reduce the cost of textbooks, spending thousands of dollars on textbooks, even after dedicating hours to finding the best deals online.

Book.ly is a textbook price comparison site that makes buying textbooks easier and less expensive. The website offers options including purchasing new/used books/e-books or renting and standard or expedited shipping. Through Book.ly, you may also look up a book by its ISBN or sell a book back.

Most uniquely, Book.ly has school specific information so it knows what books you need for each class and which of our reputable affiliates sells them at the lowest prices. All you have to do is select your preferences along with the classes you are taking and Book.ly does the rest.

  • Amazing AAA Discounts   16 years 19 hours ago

I've been a member for about 15 years. Some years, I've had 3 jump starts on cars and Tour Books and maps for several states, other years, nothing, not even a map needed from them.

Best benefits have been as a traveler. Hotel discounts are great, particularly if you pick up Tour Books of states you're going to -- they have a ratings system that includes star level, description, etc. and you get a discount, and you get that in an easy to access format, particularly on the road, when you might not have internet access/working smart phone. I have used the trip planning service before, and it's quite handy for planning road trips and finding attractions along the way. They also have AAA approved auto-repair, with discounts. In addition, you can get discounts on fun things to do. Some you could match elsewhere, like Entertainment Book or online, but it's really handy to just show your AAA card and get a discount. My big problem is I forget to ask for my AAA discount at odd places, like restaurants.

Ten years ago, AAA was a better deal -- cheaper, and less stuff was available through other means. With smart phones & GPS mapping, you can do a lot of legwork to save money on your own, if you take the time, or do it before you head out traveling. But then again, AAA has an iPhone app to show you discounts, too. :-) And it's nice that they've done the research to rate places for you, so you know what you're getting into (how much a restaurant in an unfamiliar location will cost -- like when we went driving up the coast of CA one year).

  • Adjusting Financial Attitudes: Lessons for Parents and their Children   16 years 19 hours ago

Money management skills are so important for kids to learn, especially in today's economy. In our family, the kids receive an allowance linked to chores. If they fail to complete the chore, their allowance is docked a certain amount. As a gateway to giving a child a credit card, my Dad opened a virtual family bank, where the kids can check their balances and divide their money into spending, savings, and charitable giving. This has proven to be a great way to teach financial responsibility and the value of saving. You can watch a video of how the virtual bank works at www.youtube.com/user/famzoodotcom and sign your family up now at www.FamZoo.com!

This definitely made me think. Our senses are important but maybe sometimes (most of the time?) we should listen to our brains instead of our senses.

  • Six Months as an Amazon Seller   16 years 20 hours ago

I love buying books on Amazon, then selling them back when I'm finished with them for the semester or whatever. I buy all my textbooks off of there because it's much cheaper than buying from the school store. Then, at the end of the year, I try to make a slight profit back. I can't believe you listed 1,500 books though!

  • How to Agree without Compromise   16 years 20 hours ago

When you have a huge issue between you and your spouse, like where to live or the question of children, it seems like you can't win if you have different opinions. Someone will always be upset by the decision. The only thing couples can do is discuss these major issues at the beginning of their relationship, because once you're married, there is little you can do. If there is a deal breaker, at least you notice it early in the relationship. Then, you can think about whether or not you can give and take or if the relationship isn't worth it...

  • Six Months as an Amazon Seller   16 years 22 hours ago

I would buy all my college texts online and mostly always on amazon. I would always be willing to pay a little more for a book with a good description. I was always a little weary of buying from a no description offer, and I always needed the book asap so I didn't have time to mess with returns.

  • 6 Secret Homemade Stain Removers That Kick Butt   16 years 1 day ago

If table cloth is white...hang wet on line outdoors, and on the stain put lemon juice. Then rub salt into the lemon juice and let dry in the sun. Removes rust very well. I did this with my husbands Navy whites.

  • 8 Truths From a Mystery Shopper You Must Read Before You Get Started   16 years 1 day ago

Is the ShadowShopper website legit? I spent all day working on their site and noted that the $4.95 fee I paid will expire in a couple days and then they will charge me $99.00 a year. If this is not the site for me to search for jobs can you direct me to the site that is legitimate?

  • How to Improve Your Credit Score   16 years 1 day ago

In our crazy world (in which many have already defaulted on their mortgage payments) our credit scores go DOWN when we pay off our home loans?

I know that when I was going to re-finance earlier this year they tried to tell me that I didn't have enough open credit and that it affected my credit score (which was somewhere in the neighborhood of 700+). They told me that I should OPEN A COUPLE OF REVOLVING CREDIT ACCOUNTS to raise my score! Don't you idiots see (or care) what got us into this mess in the first place?

For the record I have never missed a payment in 25 years as an adult, I have a decent salary, and I only have two loans right now (house and wife's student loans). If I don't have the highest credit score possible something is deeply wrong with this system.

  • CitiMortgage Told Me to Default on My Loan   16 years 1 day ago

Wow...Paul Michael....you just told my exact story. I had the same situation happen with Bank of America. I did not stop paying my mortgage as they said I should, but they did put me into a 3 month modification program that turned to 6 months, then the letter came saying I was denied, and now in default of 6 months. I actually wrote to Obama pretty much asking "What's Up With That". I received a "form" letter from the White House saying, "Thank you for expressing your interest in today's problematic financial crisis and that they were working on bringing the country back." Wasn't that a load of crap....didn'e even respond to my aactual message. I guess he's been too busy giving parties at his white house that we are all paying the mortgage on! Thanks...Don Madden dam4210@yahoo.com
