As a matter of fact, I ask myself that question ALL THE TIME about anything I am thinking of purchasing! I've been doing that style calculation for years and it's prevented me from buying things I didn't really need, or if I did need it I would shop around to find a better bargain, barter for it, borrow it, or do without!
Doesn't matter WHAT your job or income is, this method absolutely works! I've worked retail making $8 per hour and I would calculate how many hours I'd have to work to purchase a certain item (How about a $4.00 latte- TOTALLY NOT WORTH IT!!! Work 1/2 hour for a cup of coffee? No way! I can make my own at home for much much less!).

I have completed Quantum Theory. This is obviously quite a statement but it is never the less TRUE. With this information I have created the first and only(so far) quantum computer. I developed what I considered to be the most basic and fundamental structure that I could that encapsulates God and the Devil, the Universe and family.

I used to make peanut butter for years as where I lived, the commercial ones were pathetic.
To overcome the separation of oil/pb, we used to store the jar upside down, or keep rotating now and again. Not really as painful as it sounds and it keeps much better and our homemade PB never really stood around that long anyhow.

I use the don't buy stuff you really don't need, cook your own food, don't borrow, and buy to save methods. Of course, it all starts with a budget.

But I did know and got my son a student discount and myself a defensive driver’s certification discount from our auto insurance company, The Hartford. I used to make peanut butter for years as where I lived, the commercial ones were pathetic.
To overcome the separation of oil/pb, we used to store the jar upside down, or keep rotating now and again. Not really as painful as it sounds and it keeps much better and our homemade PB never really stood around that long anyhow.
And we roasted with the skin, blew it off and then ground it. Slightly more tedius but cheaper and fresher.
we got our first magic jack more than a yr ago; renewed it when contract expired, and are still using it today. ($20 for unit, $20 for a yr's service.)
the times it worked (99%) far outweigh those few times the line was choppy and i would attribute that to the dsl quality at the time.
yes definitely it depends on your internet connection, and of course, its pretty logical that wired connection is best whether broadband (rather than wifi) or phone (rather than cordless).
our family has been buying it -- my three siblings have it too, and we call with it regularly; with my sister, at least 2x daily.
our aunts, uncles and even in-laws have bought it too. definitely works.
@Cidre: No shame in retail. I was merely trying to put things in perspective. If you're working for $8 an hour, "little" treats cost a big chunk of your salary.
