  • Is MagicJack a Scam?   16 years 2 days ago

I purchased this for my husband, who is deployed to Iraq right now. It is totally NOT a scam. To be able to hear his voice daily make the $20 so worth it. During the last deployment we used calling cards and instant messenger. Calling cards add up quick so to be able to have this in his room and able to call without getting dressed and walking down to the MWR is a God-send.

Wow great story. Curious do you think selling books is better on Amazon.com than it would be on ebay?

  • Logitech QuickCam Vision Pro webcam: why doesn't 4 stars tell the full story?   16 years 2 days ago

This is an interesting review. I wish I'd seen it before I bought my Quickcam Pro.

I have made some discoveries that haven't been mentioned here, and might help other users achieve a good framerate where previously they got a bad one.

Quicktime - If you go to Preferences / Recording and change the Quality from the default 'Device Native' to 'Best H.264', you will get a lovely smooth 640x480 30fps recording.

Any other app - If you have another app, such as ScreenFlow, which also exhibits the choppy framerate, you can fix it with the following steps:

    - Launch the offending app, and being a recording
    - Launch Quicktime and go to 'New movie recording' (make sure your Quicktime recording prefs are setup as instructed above). As soon Quicktime opens the preview of the QuickCam video it will kick the camera into working at full framerate IN THE OTHER APP. It's very odd, but it works.

I think it's a shame. Logitech did drop the ball on this one, but at least there are workarounds.

  • 7 Ways My Clunker Is Smarter Than a Hybrid   16 years 2 days ago

As a person who has driven "sturdy" old clunkers most of her adult life, I found a validating peer in Kentin and his loyalty to same. As for finding reliable cars, I've always depended on the expertise of my mechanics (two different, over the course of time), who also view and purchase vehicles at auctions, to obtain reliable used vehicles when needed (three total used cars in 23 years of driving them). "CarFax" reports and its ilk also provide useful information as regards avoiding individual vehicles with hidden predispositions to serious fault.

Having said all that, I now, however, find I need to agree with Barlington re: the "buy and hold" strategy being ideal. I purchased my first new car at age 40, and at age 44 intend to drive my Toyota (yes, that's right...) Matrix with 60K miles for another 60K, at least (certainly, for as long as it runs). As most of my miles are on the highway, commuting between Boston and senior-aged parents in Buffalo, a Hybrid just didn't seem to offer much to me, mileage-wise, to justify it's much greater sales/maintenance costs. I average about 35mpg over the road (and utilize public transport in Boston), and that's fine with me...

One little thing I did at purchase which has reduced costs -- I bought a new car from the previous model year. Off the bat, my purchase price and excise tax were steeply discounted; my insurance is lower each year than would have been, and my "new one year old" purchase seems to be holding a decent price as it ages out...

  • Best of Personal Finance: How to Make Coconut Milk Kefir   16 years 3 days ago

I have discovered a cheaper way of making coconut milk. Put a half cup of coconut in the mixer/blender with warm water and blend for 5 minutes. Strain through thin cotton cloth. If you want some thinner milk, reuse the coconut for a second washing. I just love this coconut milk, it has a great texture and taste . I have not tried sugar content for kefir, but it is great to drink as it is.

  • Living Without Air-Conditioning Can Save Big Bucks This Summer   16 years 3 days ago

...Or just compromise. Turn your thermostat up to 80. 80 is actually a very comfortable temperature. The AC will run MUCH less but will keep the humidity down when it does. During the particularly hot months we tend to keep it 85. And yes...at night the AC is off and the windows are open.

  • Great idea for Papa Murphy’s – make the pizzas in order.   16 years 3 days ago

By the tone of your words I can tell your probably a road rage kind of person. Chill out and make the best out of a bad experience. Hey, if you hadn't been stuck there waiting on pizza you may have been spared being hit by a drunk driver...Everything happens for a reason, embrace it, don't let it get to you, it's bad for the soul.

  • Do You Need an Estate Plan?   16 years 3 days ago

Estate planning is extremely important in order to take care of your family in the event something happens. The power of attorney for example. If you get in a wreck and lose your ability to communicate, your still there, but if you have given power of attorney to your wife, then she can take care of things for you.

Planning for divying up your estate also takes out all of the huge emotional turmoil that goes on after the loss of a loved one. Families have gotten into huge fueds and long term fights when they try to decide who gets what.

  • Are Your Five Senses Tricking You to Spend More?   16 years 3 days ago

Advertisers use our senses to create a desire to need something in our mind. By learning to be content with yourself and what you have, you will lessen the effects that all of the advertising will have on you. That's why all the advertising makes things look so wonderful.

  • Are Your Five Senses Tricking You to Spend More?   16 years 3 days ago

That's a fun way of thinking of things.
I'd also point out that factors such as sight, smell, sound, etc... are used in stores to entice us to buy.
I might not be crazy about a dress I see in Anthropologie, for example (it might not fit me well, or it might be a bit beyond my budget), but it's so PRETTY in there, and there is such nice music, and there are such pleasant smells wafting through the well-lit dressing rooms anyway that I end up buying the dress anyway.
Stores are really smart about enticing out senses- it used to just be sight, but now it's sound and smell too- among other factors. So it's indeed important to consider how these factors might be influencing our purchase decisions!

London has long been the capital of the UK fashion industry and has a wide range of foreign designs which have integrated with modern British styles. Typical British design is smart but innovative yet recently has become more and more unconventional, fusing traditional styles with modern techniques.

  • How to Improve Your Credit Score   16 years 3 days ago

For me, all you have to do is keep your money and debts on track and pay religiously. That is the most effective way on improving your credit score. I experienced that and I can say that it really pays off to be a disciplined person. If people are disciplined and knows what their priorities are, then bad credit score won't be a big issue really.
