Disappointed that you suggested going shopping on Thanksgiving. Those employees deserve a holiday, too! Especially right before the crazy Christmas season. I usually enjoy your articles, but that item was difficult to agree with.
When we host the family for Thanksgiving I always make the turkey the day before and refrigerate it in broth to keep it moist. I make the broth by stripping the turkey bones and boiling the carcass, drippings, and neck for about three hours. (I do cheat and add chicken broth to the pan while the turkey is baking to start with.) I pour about half of the broth over the now cold turkey and will use the rest of the broth to make the gravy. I usually reduce the gravy broth a bit to make the broth a little stronger. The day of, I gently heat the turkey in the microwave and finish in a crock pot. Leaves the whole oven ready for the sides. I usually make a turkey breast in my little Nesco the morning of Thanksgiving as well because there are a ton of us.
It's a lot of work, clean up, and stress out of the way and nice to know that you have a turkey that's done, and a large quanity of good gravy ready to heat up at the last minute.
How about finding something to do which doesn't involve making others work on a traditional family holiday. Shopping? Really? Either get family or friends together or go help someone else. I'm tired of people trying to destroy traditions to make or save a buck.
I have a Discover It Secured card in the mail to me right now.
No annual fee. The exact same rewards program, monthly FICO, customer service and protection as the unsecured Discover It card. It converts to an unsecured card after 12 months of good payment history with a full refund of the security deposit.
It is, without a doubt, the best secured card offer I've ever seen.
It isn't automatically available, you have to apply for a Discover It card first and if they deny they may counter-offer with the secured card but if that happens, it is an in with an unbranded Discover card.
How long have these been the rules? I suspect in 1947 one might see tips recommended at 10%. Why should that rule ever ever change? BTW I work for Fedex and get zero tips for long trips in any weather. You wanna start tipping guys like me based on shipping price? I firmly believe you should NOT. But I oppose percent inflation in tipping as well. If it was ever 15%, there is no reason that percent should rise. Prices rise-tips increase, but the distance from the kitchen to the tables hasn't gotten any farther in some beloved old steak house. Were yesterday's waitresses lesser people than today's, deserving less?
I love this article. Each item is so different and most people just choose one method or another, when in reality, they should focus on what is best in each situation. I have also used gazelle (decent for phones) and optisell (music stuff and phones) for some stuff because I didnt have to haggle.
What is sad is that people have been led to believe (from a very young age) that they require gift exchange to truly enjoy Christmas. And that acquiring more material possessions leads to happiness.
Sounds fair, Sherri. Could you please point out those grammatical errors?
Oops! I definitely missed that one. Sometimes my fingers get ahead of my brain. Thanks for the catch :)
No. I don't care for crowds and feel I can find as good deals if I just watch sales throughout the year.
Thanks for the catch, IBIKENYC!
I've corrected the text.

I would use the money to replace lost income from when my husband was just sick.

Agreed, travelling to Bali might not worth money and effort, it is hot, humid and crowded.
I am a new mom to twin boys and I'd love to give them a Christmas to remember this year and be able to put some money into their college savings.
I would buy this year's Christmas gifts as well as next year's!
I honestly prefer Cyber Monday!
Probably not, I hate crowds!
I would use it to buy some necessities for my kids and some card making supplies so I could make extra money with it!
I'd use it to buy holiday gifts, finish furnishing our apt, and add to my massage books for work to make more money
