I used Skype when I was studying abroad in Italy. Phone calls home would have been crazy expensive, but with Skype, I was able to talk to my parents on a regular basis!

I just started my own blog about personal finance and even though I didn't do it for profit, because let's be honest a brand new blog is not going to make any money for a looooong time, but I still like to think that maybe some day I would make at least enough to pay for the hosting fees.
I thought starting a blog was difficult but it really was very easy. It takes a little bit of time but it's doable. I still have a lot to learn about blogging but why not start now?
I say if you have something to say about any topic that interest you, just start a blog even if it's just for yourself. Hey, you never know.
I use Skype to call my sister in Spain (or China or Hungary or wherever she happens to be at the moment!). I'm so thankful to not have to pay international calling rates! It was also great to Skype her when I moved to a new place - I used the video call to give her a tour of the place!

A good tip is to use Google hangouts! You can have up to ten people in a video call, and it's complete free!

i used an app on my phone to talk to my family while in Africa and used the hotels wifi to save on data charges...it saved a ton
