We celebrate at home. We'll do some sort of special dinner, with a later dessert. Gifts are usually something small- this year I made husband and daughter coffee mugs painted with sharpies then baked. Got the mugs at the Dollar Store.:)
I teach private lessons and there are so many expenses involved. Private teachers have to pay a high percentage of self employment taxes usually 30 percent, their own retirement, health insurance, fixing and maintaining instruments, and get no paid time off, or vacation days. Typically muscians are highly trained with many years of school, lessons and performing experience. Other professions like a doctor or lawyer may have the same amount of experience but make much more money than a private teacher.
We do not buy cards for each other because it's just something that ends up getting thrown away anyway! We may make a special meal together and watch a movie at home. We make sure to spend some time with each other.
Candlelit home-cooked dinner (can save at the least $15 per person if going to a somewhat nice restaurant).
Crafted cards (can save at least $5-6 dollars per person assuming one has paper and pens.)
Bouquet picked from garden (saves at least $6)
Hand-made coupons for small gestures, like back/neck rub or breakfast in bed service.
We usually make cards and exchange them. Then we make a nice dinner together and enjoy the evening at home. We like to have a monthly or bi-monthly dinner date out together, but make sure it's never on Valentine's Day, as we don't want to pay double for a crowded restaurant! We acknowledge the day, but also believe a solid relationship is about being caring every day, not just one day of the year.
I like to show my love all year long so it's no pressure to impress my wife on Feb 14th. Other than that we like a simple dinner at a restaurant that's not expensive and a movie night.
My Sweetie and I "pretend shop".....first we go to the card store and spend time picking out the perfect card for each other...we then go online and choose the perfect jewelry -often diamonds then we plan the perfect getaway vacation by checking travel sites. We have allot of fun and we do all this without spending a dime- since it's the thought that counts! We both feel totally loved!
What my boyfriend and I are doing are not getting each other gifts, but instead just cooking a nice meal together at his apartment and watching a movie. Very romantic!
We wait until the day after to celebrate. Gifts are less expensive and restaurants aren't booked. Sometimes we just skip going out altogether and spend the day at home doing activities together.
Body scrubs/Shower gels - if you use a shower gel that has minimal harmful ingredients and a scrubbing agent in one you don't need to buy a puff or loofa every few months
Cellulite cream- use it for several days before you plan to show off your thighs or whatever, despite being temporary, it gives you results when you don't have the time to work it out or were just too lazy to begin with like ..some...one..0:)
Chapstick - yea a lot of them are crummy but the right one can help when you're not ontop of your fresh (not distilled or boiled) water intake. Just look for simple ingredients or eat a greasy lunch :)... But seriously just drink more water!!
Others have done a valiant job of correcting and rebutting the numerous misrepresentations and myopic ignorance of the article above, so I include their comments (below) by reference. However, I couldn't bring myself to leave this page without registering my disgust. If the author really does think that music lessons for her kid are less important than her haircut, then it's clear why she doesn't understand what goes into music lessons, what their value is, and why they cost what they do.
The conversation seems to be focused on the $60/hr rate. How about the fact that to get to the $120,000/yearly salary figure, a piano teacher would have to give eight lessons a day, five days a week, for 50 weeks a year.
Great article, i think this gives new perspective for me on how to answer a few of these questions. Sure it will come in handy tomorrow for me, Thankyou
As an avaid camper/hiker in FLORIDA....i love wicking shirts and chapstick. I wouldn't dream of going to the beach with out suntan lotion and my chapstick. I agree with the baby stuff. I've even changed my infant on a pile of pinestraw with my bandana on top while out camping. It worked great!

We try to keep it simple, we usually do a small gift and have dinner together at home.
Cook a romantic meal at home. It's cheaper than going out.
I'm lucky because my girlfriend hates valentine's day. Just a normal day for us! We do save money on romantic dates by cooking for each other.
You really do not understand what teaching is about if you think someone can teach for 40 hours per week without dying of fatigue.
By taking the time to appreciate each other. It's good for the soul and it don't cost a thing.

Neither Bach nor Beethoven died at a young age. I'm just saying.
My kids make homemade cards for Daddy which are treasured more than store-bought cards.

We delayed a new family room furniture by repairing a cushion at an upholstery shop.
We have substituted vintage for brand new in some circumstances, like art, furniture, dishes, cars etc.
I've waited for half off clearance sales. If it isn't there, then I can't get it.
I always have a price range in which I will consider a purchase. If it gets to that or below, then I can buy it.

LOL. Really.
Help! I just tried making the liquid soap with castile and it turned into a huge lump! What did I do wrong?

I don't know the answer to that. Maybe by talking about it. Definitely by thinking about it. Thanks for the thoughtful comment:-)
