  • Ask the Readers: How Do You Handle Rude Questions About Money?   10 years 21 weeks ago

If I feel a question about money and finances is rude, I usually dodge the question and just change the subject. If I cant dodge it...I will just give a general answer that does not disclose anything at all.

I can't recall being asked such money questions, but my go-to would probably be "don't worry about it", which is my way of letting someone know I have no intention of answering his or her question.

  • netSpend: The Story of the Visa Debit Card We Did Not Apply For   10 years 21 weeks ago

THIS CARD IS HORRIBLE......I purchased a netspend debit visa yesterday from local Fred's I wanted to pay a bill online without using my own debit or credit card. This had to be my worse mistake which made me feel horrible all day. First I called to activate and the gentlemen which not one I spoke with which I spoke with three spoke any English which made it ten times difficult to understand. He asked for my date of birth, address, social security, and name. I IMMEDIATELY said NO! I don't give this information out like that which is why their is so much Identity Theft anyways he said well if you don't give information then I will have to set you as limitless which I couldn't do anything BUT go inside the store....and I told him You guys are scam artists, rip offs.....I need to pay an important bill and you tell me unless I provide my most prised, personal information then I can't do what I want with the money I loaded onto the card.....NO! SO, he set st limitless I called back and and I was going to bite the bullet and trust the people then the gentlemen I spoke to this time tell me NO YOU CANT CHANGE YOIR MIND IN OTHER WORDS...its set at limitless and I can't change...I said sir I have an important bill to pay I need this money....Well we can't change it so I asked to speak to a supervisor floor manager what ever on hold a long period of time got hung up on.....call back spoke with a lady she said the same thing the second person said these people are coached and train on what they need to tell people....finally spoke to someone that was suppose to handle my problem and THEY DIDNT......LISTEN DO NOT GET THIS CARD..... FREDS, VISA, WALMART whoever carry this name NETSPEND card needs to pull away from them I will contact every chain that sells this card....and if you've been got by NETSPEND contact everyone you can so it doesn't happen to anyone else.....Netspend left a bad taste I'm my mouth and this taste I want out.......HORRIBLE BUSINESS and I don't see why VISA or someone else isn't looking into their practice....

I can't think of anything rude I have been asked...I guess I am a naturally curious person, so I'm probably interested in the conversation and would turn the question around on them.

  • 6 Retirement Products That Aren't Worth Your Money   10 years 21 weeks ago

Wow - this is really really bad advice! Long term care is a MUST if u can afford it AND a reverse mortgage can be a life saver for the elderly that are poor but have home equity and want to die at home. also, 'junk' bonds absolutely gave a place in a portfolio rhat is diversified. Who wrote this!???

  • Ask the Readers: How Do You Handle Rude Questions About Money?   10 years 21 weeks ago

My answer really depends on who asks the question, and what is the question. I do not discuss with anyone how much I paid for something. If someone asks how much I'm saving for retirement, I give them percentages not dollar amounts. I will answer how much I set aside in regular savings and emergency funds but again I do not give the total in the account. I may say I have X amount transferred on the first and fifteenth from my checking account to savings.

I don't. I pretend I didn't hear and then change the subject. But rarely does anyone besides my family ask me about money.

  • Ask the Readers: How Do You Handle Rude Questions About Money?   10 years 21 weeks ago

Ignore it or just say don't know.

  • Ask the Readers: How Do You Handle Rude Questions About Money?   10 years 21 weeks ago

Usually whenever somebody asks me a question that I don't want to answer (money related or not) I ask them "Why do you want to know?". It is very effective.

  • 15 Things You Should Buy at Costco   10 years 21 weeks ago

One thing about the berries - I've had mold issues the last few trips. This sometimes means that it's more cost efficient to buy a small pack for the same price than waste half a tray because the berries mold so quickly.

This isn't always the case, but if you find they are quite ripe and don't plan to freeze or use them up quickly, be mindful of their condition.

Their quinoa and rice prices are also spectacular. I can pay $5-9 for a small 8-14 oz bag of quinoa at grocery stores or get 4 lbs for less than $12 at costco.

I just give a vague answer.

  • Ask the Readers: How Do You Handle Rude Questions About Money?   10 years 21 weeks ago

I'm not often asked rude questions about money. I guess I've been asked how much I paid for something a couple times, and I just answer honestly.

  • Speed Past Car Debt With This Simple Timing Trick   10 years 21 weeks ago

A brand-new car, well cared for, can last longer than 12 years. I've got one, still running like a top, and it's approaching 20. It still looks great, too. I've been planning for a new one, keeping up with what's out there, so I'll know what to buy next, but this car keeps going and going, with few repairs necessary.

  • Should You Move to a New City to Reduce Lifestyle Costs?   10 years 21 weeks ago

Like you, I think it's a mistake to not consider all of the spending and earning that happens in your current home city, and compare that to the one you are thinking of. When moving from Los Angeles to Austin TX a couple of years ago, our housing costs doubled (we had a screaming deal in L.A. and Austin rents are skyrocketing), and our income went down by about 25%. But roll in the rest of our expenses, and we're spending about 30% less than we were before, and we have a much better quality of life. Ironically, our personal environmental impact has lessened quite a bit since moving to Texas, but I guess so much depends on the city you're in!

  • 10 Important Signs That Your Job Sucks   10 years 21 weeks ago

I've been working as a professional delivery driver & in inventory control for a total of nearly 4-years now.

Recently moved to a new position after what seemed a very positive work atmosphere, but over the course of several months had realized that the person I had trusted as supervisor was in fact related directly to the CEO of the company and existed under a protective umbrella.

Unfortunately with that keeping the worry of a 'rain-storm' off of his head he could bounce around a pretty mighty ego. Coming up on 6 months of full-time commitment to this company, that can be quite laborious physically and demands driving several hundred miles at times in a day, I had decided to discuss my want of an evaluation soon with the desire to see a minimal raise.

As it happens a co-worker who needs some serious surgery is needing someone to take his position over entirely for the next 5+ months, and as a fellow was moved in to fill that position I would be required to move on as a full-time driver. Having been a full-time driver professionally several times in my life I knew the perks of doing it but am acutely aware of how stressful non-stop driving can be.

To me this vertical shift in upward responsibility was not a horizontal movement, and was certainly one which meant longer work hours as delivery distanced and frequency increased, as well as the added stress that sitting all day in a moving vehicle as a driver can have.

So naturally being a capable but intelligent professional I asked if this would include a raise. Long story short the umbrella-benefiting rascal felt "this is not a promotion", and that regardless of the work hours involved, "is not a full-time position" (it often exceeds full-time as a matter of fact!).

I couldn't help but almost laugh at his ridiculousness. And me asking for wage increased earned the snark, "I'm not a slave driver trying to get away with paying you cheap wages." ...

So those things noted; and leaving out his brief but obvious power-tripping over insanely retarded situations, I've confided that moving on to a 'better' place is the best decision. After-all, I can earn more and deal with less issues going somewhere else where honesty and personal integrity are more valued. :)

I will miss the great co-workers who I enjoyed being around at this company while it lasted. But let this be proof that a few bad apples can indeed spoil the bunch!

  • 10 Depressing Jobs That Aren't Worth the Money   10 years 21 weeks ago

Where do they pay $9... sign me up. Here it's $7.25 and you're told it's at least 30 hours a week, when it's really between 6-24 (if management likes you) and the job is only temporary.

  • 10 Depressing Jobs That Aren't Worth the Money   10 years 21 weeks ago

I totally agree with you. I was a telemarketer for a month and was fired because I found out I was pushing a scam on un-expecting senior citizens. You sit in a cubicle with multiple people, tell lies, and are expected to smile as you lie your butt off. If you ask about the validity of a product you may never see, you're told not to do so by another employee as a warning and if you investigate further.. you're out the door. I hated it, and absolutely no doors were opened at all. In interviews, I always have to explain why I wanted to be a telemarketer. I was desperate and needed money to pay my bills.

I haven't really been asked questions like this from anyone but close family and if uncomfortable I usually just act like I am not sure and need to check with my husband.
