I agree Joe! I have a collection of thrift store finds in my closet. I shutter at the thought of paying retail for my wardrobe. I have Michael kors boots I purchased for $14.99 from Goodwill, and retail is well over $200. Image what I could purchase from a thrift store with $200. I am frugal and proud. I am cheap when I have to be.
I wish i had that depressing job of delivering mail so I can quit the depressing job of cutting lunch meat for thankless unhealthy people who make enough to afford twenty-dollar-a-pound "lunch meat".
This is a very old scam, I heard of it 6 yrs ago. Google it. It's not even a girl- it's professional con men, they have net works and make hundreds of thousands every year. They hire girls or prostitutes to pose for sessions. They are patient to work with you weeks. In the end it's all about $$. Look up "on-line dating scams". (They target middle aged single men).
Every year, we adopt a turkey through Farm Sanctuary. It's a fun way to have a turkey involved in our Thanksgiving celebration since we won't be eating one.
We buy a 40 lb box of chicken and that's most of our meat for the month. I have two drawers full of spices. My go-to is a blend I made which has a combination of: seasoned salt, pepper, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, parsley, nutmeg, and herbs de provence, plus a little sugar and chili powder. Sometimes I only combine a few of those for a different flavor, and sometimes I throw in something wild, like a dash of cinnamon or curry. We keep three leg quarters in each freezer bag. We each eat one for dinner and split the third at lunch the next day. If they don't thaw out all the way, we boil them and use the liquid to cook rice, pasta, or make soup. I especially love when my husband grills or smokes them, but we usually roast them in the oven. If done when they are still slightly frozen, the meat is jucier and more flavorful. Sometimes I also do cheesy chicken or another change-up.
The new Disclosure is your typical government attempt to add more complexity and misinformation into the simple request for a loan on real estate. Take for example...the appraisal fee. The appraiser is paid about $350. for the actual work involved for the appraisal. However there is a MANAGEMENT COMPANY (think owned as a revenue source for the lender) that charges another $150. or so. This is all grouped into a one line item called "appraisal fee". Again, the consumer is ripped off over and over. It is a never ending battle! Such a shame that we as consumers cannot trust any SOB that is employed in government eating out of the tax payer trough!
Something should be added - Never, ever suggest or have the nerve to come out and ask someone to stay over at their house!! If you don't get a direct and stated invitation with arrival and departure dates, have enough social intelligence not to think that someone enjoys having you sleep at their place, use their private spaces, etc.. It amazes me, but unless you set boundaries, some pushy, rude people will drop major hints or come out and ask. They act like they're doing you some kind of favor! Really?? Of course we all know they just want a free ride for their own enjoyment. Don't do it or even hint if you have any class at all! Now if you do get a stated direct invite, then follow the steps above. Otherwise, wake up and realize how obnoxious and ignorant you are!
Hmm...I guess ours really have not changed over all these years. We still cook the same foods and all the family comes over. We still watch football and the parades on Thanksgiving, and the kids go outside to play with a football...and the adults wish they were all home at their own homes so they could take a nap after eating all the great food. :)
I've heard if you play a DVD in a computer six times, it will lock the computer on that region. So if I play a worldwide region dvd in a TV DVD player combined, will it lock on multi region? I live in region one and accidently ordered a complete set of dvd's from the UK region 2.
Call center agent... So depressing. All you do is absorb other peoples stress, anger, and frustrations all day. And the big shot companies that they trust won't empower us to do much of anything to turn things around for them. It's boring, sedentary, redundant, robotic, tedious, micro managed, and frustrating. (every detail of your calls are scrutinized and if you deviate from the script - even if the customer takes you off script, we'll too bad. You have to get back on script even if it makes things awkward). Is it worth the money? Only if it's temporary. Most companies pay more than starvation wages, but not enough to get you ahead.
My girl friend saved a bunch on maternity clothes by borrowing her sister's clothing and she gave them back to her sister when her sister was having another. The clothes were just used a couple of months between the two of them and the swapping of clothes saved them a bunch!
Also check eBay for maternity clothes and baby supplies. If you have time on your side, then you can find some good deals there. For more other items, Amazon.com is often cheaper than brick-and-mortar stores. Again, with time on your side, you can create price watches on camelcamelcamel.com for more expensive items.
Other than the crib, car seat, and breast pump (according to every website and book that I've read), everything else that you need can be purchased second hand.
I had a job offer for a job in a retail store for aromatherapy (seasonal) but turned it down because it required leather shoes (not cheap) and all black attire within a day!
I enjoyed your article on hosting. I have an etiquette question. Let's say friends are coming to visit you from far away. You and the friends go to a party where they meet one of your family, a nephew, who may in the past have been passingly acquainted with these people, and this nephew--without prior consultation- decides to invite them (and maybe you, maybe not) to his beach home for the weekend (they are staying a total of five days in all). What do you think of that?
Sleep in on Friday morning and skip the "sales".
We usually have Thanksgiving at Grandma's and all bring a dish.

I would love to see another article about what, specifically, the citizens of each of these thriftier countries DO with their money.

We play Bingo with M&Ms for small gifts.

I'm just a kid at heart. Peanut butter and banana sandwiches.
Max, you're the best. <3
Ranchboy and I would love to experience this wonderful Thanksgiving! I hope we can someday spend the holidays together!

As I don't usually travel to see family for Thanksgiving, I usually have a Friendsgiving potluck!
Don't forget Secretary. Even worse than being an Administrative Assistant.
