  • Is hunting/fishing a good way to feed your family?   16 years 3 days ago

My family this past winter lived on deer meat, and had we not been so lucky as to bag one of our own, get a couple from friends, and yes, even one road kill, I am sad to say I'm not sure what we would have ate instead. My husband was injured at work and has not been able to work in 2 years so our income is next to nothing. We are lucky in the fact that we live out in the country and own our land which means in our state we do not have to buy a hunting license as long as we stay on our land. So for us the price of a deer is a bullet and some freezer paper and tape along with our time. I plan on hitting our pond hot and heavy along with my kids and we are going to have some fish frys to get us through the summer now.

  • Is MagicJack a Scam?   16 years 3 days ago

I passed out a little reading this comment, lol. I think you should take some English writing classes if you want people to take you seriously as a PC technician. Sorry, don't take it as an insult.

  • I Finally Canceled Comcast Cable…Before It Hurt More Than My Wallet   16 years 3 days ago

I can't even imagine paying $180 for those services. Because I use the broadcast channels for what little TV I have time to watch, I'm paying $74 for phone and Internet. If Comcast's charges are similar to Cox's, you must have been paying $106 a month for a zillion channels with nothing on. Why?

Last I heard, the government and comm co's wanted to get rid of broadcast service. When that happens, I just won't watch television at all. Even now, if I can't get it on my computer, I'm not likely to watch it.

  • Commission Free ETFs: A Great Option for Cost Conscious Investors   16 years 3 days ago

ETFs can be a great option for a lot of folks. The fees are lower and they will have less risk than buying individuals stocks. With the market is such bad shape, it make sense to keep your commissions low and maintain a lot of flexibility.

Co-pays can vary, so having a little emergency fund for medical mishaps is definitely helpful. Thanks for the comment!

so what...why are you getting your panties in a wad? they sent u a debit card, not a credit card!...if u dont want to use it, throw it away. it's not like someone can steal it and start taking money from you. you spent a lot of time and effort into making your experience with netspend sound alarming and scary and in fact what they are doing can actually be a convenience for a lot of people who needed a debit card in the first place. yes, lots of fees, but you dont have to use it.

This is bunk (sort of). The only ingredient that works really is the ammonia which makes your lawn green and can be found in any fertilizer.

  • Can You Afford to Follow Your Dreams? Can You Afford NOT to?   16 years 3 days ago

Very thoughtful and inspiring. I feel like I compromised my dreams and passions, first because of fear and insecurity, and then to support my family. Now at 50+, I'm pushing forward in the belief that it's not too late to reinvent myself.

  • Do generous unemployment benefits prolong the length of unemployment?   16 years 3 days ago

    Dear Xin Lu,

You are majorly out of touch with life! I am sure you live with mommy and daddy! That picture of you totally proves how you are hearless and could care less about people that are struggling.

By the way it is not possible to live on that amount of money! People that have a morgage and a real life can not live on that! You sure are heartless, in La, San Fransisco and even San Diego it is not possible! Do you really think that people that had a career and with a college degree and in many cases a Master's degree would like your "nasty" implication that they should work for mininum wage!
Well Ms. Xin Lu I sure hope you are in the situation of collecting unemployment then write an article on that when you are!!
You are really, really arrogant with your self righteous attitude and I am sure typically age discriminitory! Thank you for nothing!

  • Do generous unemployment benefits prolong the length of unemployment?   16 years 3 days ago

This is so typical of AOL and other websites that post replies that date back 2-3 months! Why dont you and AOL take off your editorials becasue you dont care about people just prolificating Conservative "kick in your teeth" ideas!

Wow and that Xin Lu probablly could care less about workings that are struggling and wont ever understand until she cant get a job! Disgusting!!!
Shame on you Xin Lu and Aol for not publishing real ideas! Say hi to George W. Bush and your other friends!

  • Do generous unemployment benefits prolong the length of unemployment?   16 years 3 days ago

I find it fairly typical of the world when I read articles like this that pertain to people that recieve unemployment. The writer in this case seems to believe strongly but, posed it as a question, that people recieving unemployment benefits are some how enjoying this situation! People that are on these benefits are very happy and are trying I am sure desperately to get a full time job with benefits!

I find it pretty disgusting that this right wing approach that everyone receiving help of some kind is out to make money at the expense of people of the US. This is proposterous! Once a person has recieved their benefits completely they can not apply for benefits until they have worked for a year!

Why would any individual who has worked for usually a number of years want to go on insurance for a very long time? Do you think this feels good and is part of that person's ethics in working? No it isn't!

Well Xin Lu wow what a synical and typical hate oriented editorial! You dont mind having a job and working probablly with benefits and then suggest that people who have worked for up to 25 years and now find themselves unemployed and through no fault of their own! Do you really think Xin Lu that a person that was used to making $50,000 a year and may have as many as 4 children wants to make 1/5 of that or less?

Why can't you write an editorial about the politcal system that made unemployment in this country extremely necessary?? Do you know how overwelming and also, embarrassing it is to get a check from the government because of extenuating curcumstances such as age discrimination, being laid off because your company wants to make extreme profits by relocating to China, Mexico, or other overseas locations?

Why doesn't AOL employ me to write editorials that aren't slanted and "conservative only based"??

Xin Lu why dont you comment on those real situations and not trying to be part of the status Quo in conservatism starting with a political party that starts with the letter "R"??

No I am sure it is easy to Point the finger at a workforce that is out of their mind with grief~ By the way, usually people that believe as you do that unemployed people would be thrilled to accept money that they can "bearly" live on and in many ways "can not" live on are ones that would be thrilled themselves to live "off the system" in which you are suggesting!

In closing, why don't you investigate ways that people can become employed suggest companies that are highering, working outside of the country for employment, or maybe getting government loans to start a new viable business?
No I am sure that is too "difficult" and as usual you and the status Quo "Conservative party takes the easy way out and labels( or as you like to strongly suggest without coming out and saying it) the long term hard working citizen as a "lazy, free loader".
Thank you for that label and kick in the head as usual it only makes things worse
    Xin Lu!!

  • Adjusting Financial Attitudes: Lessons for Parents and their Children   16 years 3 days ago

The Families and Money survey mentions reasons that parents still provide financial support: some attribute it to college debt and unemployment; but many also mention overspending on the kids' behalf.

I did wonder if parents wanting to stay involved in their kids lives and wanting them to be happy delayed them from cutting financial ties.

  • Adjusting Financial Attitudes: Lessons for Parents and their Children   16 years 3 days ago

I'm 25. My parents taught me some important money "attitudes" such as the importance of saving and never to carry a balance on a credit card. I also learned in elementary school how to balance a checkbook. The place where I felt my high school and college both failed was in teaching the slightly more high-level skills such as how to calculate compound interest, choose between different savings vehicles, and how to invest. I had to learn those things on my own during and after college by reading books and blogs. I also took a course on project economics in college, since there was no "personal finance" course for non-finance majors (although my college added one after I graduated).

Also, I wonder what portion of those young people who are receiving financial support from their parents actually could support themselves without it? I'm sure that some of them are still financially dependent on their parents, but others may be taking the money to allow a more expensive lifestyle, to avoid later inheritance taxes (by receiving gifts up to the gift allowance each year), or both.

  • Find Your Passion   16 years 3 days ago

Thanks for the great article Philip! It can be really intimidating at first to go down this unconventional path to actually carve out something you LOVE doing in life rather than going about it like a robot like everyone else, but I think no matter how "impractical" your passion may seem, it's just all about sticking to it until you find a way to make it work and support yourself. The other thing I've really found useful recently was Henri Juntilla's book doing what you love for a living— literally the best ebook I've read in a long time, and even after doing the online thing for several years I found it really helpful too:
