It also helped me to realize just how happy I was to no longer work in such an abusive environment! Just like a bad relationship, sometimes you forget that anything can be better until you've found something better.
You want a great perk for AAA membership? You can get INSANE premiums on your car insurance. I shopped around (and I mean REALLY shopped around about 10-12 different companies) for car insurance. No one came anywhere close to what we're paying (with the same deductibles, etc) with AAA car insurance. The insurance is through AAA and the company is called Encompass. Another AAA-affiliated company (called "Members") offered us a quote too, but Encompass was by far cheaper. The price we are getting on auto insurance more than pays for our annual membership (and that's for 2 people).
It is always good and self-satisfying to give tips. It makes them inspired in a sort of way to do good in their job. Probably i am mostly a "whole dollar tipper."
I have been a NetSpend customer since 2004 and it has been at a great advantage for me. I got 1 for each of my kids when they were minors due to being very active in sports, I wasn't always able to be there to give them snacks or money to eat after events, so by getting them a card, they could buy something to eat and drink instead of doing without. I had no problem setting up accounts for them, as I had problems with the local banks due to their age. As stated by Callahn, Electricfuneral, CHAD, Economic Downturn, and Terrel, this is a pre-paid debit card service. In my opinion, it is better than having a checking account at a bank. My card has been honored at hundreds of places and for hundreds of transactions whether renting a car, booking hotel reservations, buying airline tickets, going to Las Vegas to eating a gourmet restaurant or just at whataburger. You control your spending, you are charged either $9.95 monthly or $1.00 per transaction, which ever method you choose and you can always change it if you want. I make alot of transactions so the $9.95 monthly fee works better for me. You can set up an account online to view your account history and all transactions and it's free instead of calling them for your balance which will cost you .50 cents. I closed my checking account with a well-known bank due to headaches and discrepancies with my account and all those fees they charge for their benefit and I can get an account anywhere if I want. The best thing I love about NetSpend is access to my money once it's direct deposited. I get access to my money right away, they do not make me wait. Like right now at this minute, 10:40a text message alerted me that my account was credited the amount of my payroll check and is available for use and payday is not until Tuesday, June 15 for everyone else! I always get access to my money before any of my co-workers do. I could go on and on but, all I can say to you skeptics is if you don't want the card, then just shred it or cut it up! END OF DISCUSSION! Don't make a big deal about it, nobody has stolen your identity, the card has no value or significance if you don't activate it. I work with a Criminal Justice department and this is no scam. I currently have in my possession 4 NetSpend Pre-paid Visa & Mastercards (debit) 2 for me, 1 for my daughter and 1 for my son. Thank you NetSpend for a great resource!
I like your review very much. I will probably not pick up the book though. A lot is written of minimalism yet I think the learning is in the doing. It's a pet peeve of mine. Whenever someone wants to get "organized" they run out and buy a bunch of plastic cubes. When they want to improve their relationships, they run to a book or counselor. When they want to improve their tennis game, they run to a teacher and club membership.
There is nothing wrong with any of these "solutions" except that they have a tendency to take you away from the very things that need to be done to accomplish your goals. Your mind is what organizes your life. With mindfulness and creativity, free cardboard boxes will do the job. Nothing will improve a relationship more than honest engagement with and caring about another human. Your tennis game is best improved through practice.
Time is not infinite. Choose wisely. Bonus points: things that cost nothing or next to nothing are desirable whereas methods that sell you goods and services require even more of your time because you must acquire the money to pay for them.
Yes, I gree with you. One is never fully aware how much emotionally he is tied to ones job untill he is dumped. I personally cannot say that I was dumped, but still I was 'dissapointed' quite hard by my employer in a number of situations. And it always hurts.
My advice:
- always stay fully aware that these are evil corporations and that all the persons working are just faceless slaves of these evils. Whatever they do is meant to suck out of you every piece of energy you have for as little cost as possible. Always have it in mind when they give you 'freebies', or organize you your afterwork life. All these activities are ment to 'economise' on the wages - aka have as much performace from staff for less.
- have another life with which you identify more. Be it music, sport, hobby or family, NGO, politics, whatever - always say you are a musician, father/mother or anything else first before you say where you make money.
- never put yourself in a trap when it is not you who is controlling the situation. Always follow the market and be aware what is goint out there. Then jump to whoever is willing to pay you more at the moment and never, ever feel sory about it, but alsways akt in a stoistic, kind and professional way. In simple words: act like a corporation yourself.
I was with everyone else thinking that your last article was sub-par in terms of misinformation, but you've redeemed yourself in my eyes. It takes a lot for someone to admit mistakes publicly. You should be a politician.
re: free maps and guides. I am looking for a website that will give me info about what I could see along the way. i.e. When I pick destination St. Louis to Denver, I would like to see what interesting places I could visit along the way with moderate detours.
Do you know where I could find such info.
WC Porter, you should be quite proud. (Proud of your humility... ? Ha, that's ironic).
But in all sincerity, I wouldn't want anyone investing my money or giving me financial advice if they couldn't show the strength of character I see here, on display now.
Your two articles have given me a good balance of understanding ETF's with a lot of sobriety. One wouldn't have been sufficient ;)
Every reader is now better having heard both sides of the equation.
Praise Jesus for grace, and for the order that He created. Thanks for your comments WC, and well done.
Here we go: here is the new article I posted to help balance this one out. And also check out Xin Lu's post on commission-free ETFs. Hopefully these two articles well help counter some of the bombastic claims in this one.
Branflake,
I use cork to seal my bottles. It has been used for ever. You may have some champagne coming out of it. Either way, not much to worry about.
Unless you are forced to live on a dollar a day you cannot know what it means to do so. there are a lot of other factors that go into why you are eating this way. do you buy toilet paper or banannas? will it be roast or bleach and detergent? a dollar a day indeed...!!!!
this is exactly how i was raised and how i raised my kids. my favorite memory of dad is late night snacks like butter & onion on home made bread, or potted meat on cracked. mom even canned the bony fish for patties. we were told to put a pototo in every empty spot when moving, cause they make good padding & you will always have something to eat even if you run out of money.
Ah, I didn't know that it was closed to new applicants. It's really a good credit card and so far I really like it. I've had a Schwab account for a very long time because my parents opened one for me, and I've used it to buy no load funds, but now my cash back is building up to a couple hundred dollars and I think I'll buy their ETFs.
Its not that I dont like the ppl I work with but Ive never liked making friends at work. I dont go work to make friends. And Im actually one of the nicest ppl you will ever meet, but at work I come off as a a major b*tch. Im still working right now, but I feel my job is coming to an end. For one, girl who trained me, didnt properly train me. I had to figure out everything on my own and if I make one little mistake, she goes off. Im actuallly going on vacation all of next wk. But I got a feelin I wont be comin back!
do corks leach anything else, because when i ran my tea kettle still and got done i pulled the cork i used to plug the hole some brown liquid came out of the cork it was an old champagne cork but is there any harm ?
Xin Lu,
Thanks for the post. One thing to add is that the Invest First Visa Signature Rewards card is no longer accepting new applications (in case anyone read this post and was trying to sign up). I got the card and opened a Schwab account about a month or two ago. I've been extremely impressed with Schwab's free ETF offerings. Of course, the fees are hard to beat.
It also helped me to realize just how happy I was to no longer work in such an abusive environment! Just like a bad relationship, sometimes you forget that anything can be better until you've found something better.

Thanks Jeff! As for being a politician...I think I'll stick to writing—I don't want the whole world to dislike me!
Kentin, great post.
I would love to try it on my own. I could start a yogurt business if i'll get successful. Lol

Period.
