  • Why is it so expensive to be healthy?   16 years 4 weeks ago

To the author of this ignorant article. You absolutely make no sense whatsoever, how dare you try to generalize an entire popluation based upon your ignorant assumptions. I was born and raised in Seattle and as an African American I want to know what ghetto area are you referring to?? Because the last time I checked the central area in predominately white. I also don't think considering the high cost of homes that poor people can afford to live in those border areas as you so ignorantly described in your article. Lastly I have looked at others people's cart, and I have seen some rich people buy junk food as well. I think its a matter of preference and what someone is accustomed to. People eat poor because thats all they know, I was not born rich, but I was taught from an early age the importance of good nutricien so as I became an adult even when I had little money, I still made healthy decisions when it came to buying groceries.

  • When Your Employer Dumps You   16 years 4 weeks ago

You've hit on a common but false assumption about being..."released" -- sometimes it is the best employees who are let go rather than the worse; sometimes it is the most average-est employees who are hired and stay on forever rather than the stellar ones. Who you've worked for, where you've faltered (b/c of ineptitude on others' part), and where you've excelled is revealing, and interestingly (this is based on my encounters with jobseekers) being fired from certain places = being a valuable employee.

After going through a merger with a so-so employer and then hearing about a possible acquisition for a really lousy employer, I thought "there's no way I'm going to be let go from a terrible company at a lousy job" -- fortunately, I found my way out before anything happened, and years before the company went bankrupt.

I think most people's self identity are tied to their professions, at least in the USA -- not that I think they should be; but I love the cocktail party opener and will plan on coming up with some version of that for myself.

  • What's Faster for Mortgage Payoff: $100/Month Extra or 1 Payment/Year Extra?   16 years 4 weeks ago

If you are going to finance $160K (the mortgage loan, not the price of the house) with an income of $850, then the only loan you could afford would be a 30-year loan with 2 points ($798) though you'll need to add in property taxes and insurance. Do you mean to buy the house for $160K and finance $100K?

  • The Five-Day Freeze: Batch Cooking for the Rest of Us   16 years 4 weeks ago

Those cookies look sooo good! I live alone, so if I do any batch cooking it's usually just making a big pot of chili, soup, lasagna, or whatever else I happen to make in a large batch, and freeze into single size servings. If I had a deep freeze, I probably would do more batch cooking, but I just have the top of my fridge (I live in an apartment). Great tips though.

  • 20 Signs That You Were Raised By TRUE Money-Savers   16 years 4 weeks ago

Im 22 now and I remember my mother making to much for food stamps, but bearly scraping by for bills, food ect... I remember eating.

    1. Butter Sandwiches
    2. Lettuce and relish salad--my own invention I still eat to this day.
    3. Spaghetti(no meat) 3 times a week.
    4.Bread and katsup "pizza"
5.Always saved bacon grease, or any grease for that matter.
    6.Koolaid Galore
    7.Spam
many more disgusting things, that I can't think of right now.

We never had any room to garden anything living in tiny apartments, and fresh fruits and vegies were and still are so expensive.

It wasn't about wanting to be frugal in my house but having no choice. Now that I have a family of my own I do everything opposite, while I am still thrifty and always looking for a deal I don't substitute savings for health. Although I do still save bacon grease, it just taste so darn good, MMMM POTATOES!!!

  • 20 Signs That You Were Raised By TRUE Money-Savers   16 years 4 weeks ago

When I was a teenager, an elderly lady lived in the house next to the apartment building I lived in. Her twin sister lived in the house next to hers. Myrtle and Mabel. Myrtle would give me $2 every week to take the trash out for her and her sister. I mentioned to Mabel that it wasn't necessary for her sister to give me money, I was happy to help. Mabel would just smile and say "Shutup kid, and take the money!" The sisters (both widows) often dined together. Myrtle would make dresses for her and her sister. The kitchen looked like something out of a 1930's Norman Rockwell painting. She saved EVERYTHING. Jelly jars were drinking glasses. She washed and reused aluminum foil and plastic wrap. If there was a way to save, she was an expert! Myrtle never had any children. She worked all her life. When she passed away in 1978, she left her relatives an estate valued at 25 Million dollars. Sadly, she might have been an expert at saving money, she was not able to learn how to enjoy her money.

  • When Your Employer Dumps You   16 years 4 weeks ago

I could really relate to this story, even though I haven't been sacked yet, because I've worked at a job I hated. How did you handle the situation of maybe needing a reference for your next job? It doesn't sound like your boss would have written a very good one!

I find the prospect of needing reference after my current job (where I'm not doing so well) really frightening.

  • When Your Employer Dumps You   16 years 4 weeks ago

Employees have never been assets to companies. Payroll costs are literally "liabilities" on the spread sheet. Moreover, today's employers are moving more and more to the "1099" model, where the employee becomes a sub-contractor, and as such, receives zero company benefits, and is responsible for all taxes, including the percentage of Social Security that the employer is otherwise required to chip in. When you work for someone, you need to consider that you are on borrowed time. You are there solely at his or her pleasure and whim. Florida, a so-called "right-to-work" state, is one of the worst states for employees, because unions are virtually powerless, and businesses more often successfully file claims against unemployment benefits

  • 20 New Things You Can Make With Old Denim Jeans   16 years 4 weeks ago

Just found this site today and a few others and tried a 'basket idea' , the jeans are a liner with pockets inside, great for corralling knitting etc. I am always on the lookout for jean ideas. I can't afford to sew (for many years now) and jeans have been my outlet. I've made purses (with patterns and without), pocket coin purses, a beautiful rail fence quilt (using flannel backing, keeps the heavy quilt from moving so much on the bed thru the night), a tool belt for a little boys present, a frayed cathedral style rag quilt, a picnic blanket done in triangles, coasters, ornaments, a beautiful small backpack (it was stolen), a duffel bag, a wall hanging done in varied strips with the pockets sewn on in a random pattern, a similar hanging panel with pockets for a childs bed. Sounds like a lot and yet I still look for more. Can't post pictures because most of it was given a presents.

    Thank for new ideas. M.

  • When Your Employer Dumps You   16 years 4 weeks ago

A nearly identical situation happened to me in my first job after college, except that I got fired. This was for an ad agency in a major city. I did my job well, but I didn't hide my feelings when I felt that people with more seniority were being inconsiderate. For example, a superior would tell me to instantly drop the task I was doing, to do something he needed to have done "now." So I did that task, only to see him head out the door on his lunch break.
So I got fired for a poor attitude. I was immediately shocked and upset to be fired, not seeing this termination coming. I packed up my stuff and left humiliated, shocked and upset. But I was also embarrassed and didn't want family and friends to know I had been fired. So literally within hours, I started working on looking for a new job. I brushed up my portfolio and pulled together a resume, and started making phone calls to set up appointments. I worked my way through the yellow pages. With each call, I made an index card. I wrote on it the name and number of the ad agency, and the result of the call. For example, I wrote down if the phone was busy, if the art director was out to lunch, if I had an appointment, and so on. This way I was able to make the most contacts, and keep all these agencies straight. I made looking for work my full-time job. If there was one opening in the hundred agencies in town, I was going to find it. Within a week I had full-time work at a job that was better and paid more than the job I had left.
The point of this article, however, was how to emotionally cope. In this case, and generally whenever I have an upsetting problem, I feel better as soon as I start working on a solution. Within hours my whole emotional state changed, and I was looking forward, not back. It was really empowering.
Radio personality Dr. Laura has a saying, "Do the behavior, the feelings will follow." I believe in the truth of this. People often wait around for feelings to motivate them to action. Instead, she says, just start doing the behavior, and before long you will actually feel like doing it. In this case, there are specific steps one can take to finding a new job. Just by taking constructive steps to get the process going, you will feel better about being terminated and more motivated to take the next step.

  • How to Find Really Free Freebies   16 years 4 weeks ago

I think this is where the problem lies. You request your freebies before the rest of the readers flood the website for requests. I have received emails in the past from companies letting me know that they just didn't have enough stock to fulfill all of the freebie requests they received.

I have chat board friends that still curse me over the Snuggies that didn't appear. ;)
I have all but given up on jumping on the freebie band wagon when they are posted on other websites.

  • Cheap Hotel Rates with Hotwire   16 years 4 weeks ago

Thanks for your post. I think I had seen that same $149/night listing for the July 4th weekend about a week ago, but it must have been booked since it's no longer in my search results. I just booked a $154/night, 4-1/2 star hotel which turned out to be the InterContinental Boston, ranked #16. Looking forward to it!

  • How to Make Moonshine   16 years 4 weeks ago

I use a piece or two of bread and just a little water to form a dough. Then press into the lip of the lid. Works great for me. I use a large stock pot with a hole in the top for a 90 degree elbo compression fitting to connect the coils. Works for me.

  • Free Diapers: How Persistence Got Me Into a Diaper Study   16 years 4 weeks ago

I found an offer for a free one year supply of diapers. Anyone can sign up for this and you can select to receive Pampers, Huggies or Luvs. Looks like the cost is covered by sponsors of the program. I'm so glad I found this cause I have a two year old and a 6 month old and we go through a ton of diapers every month, LOL. Everyone should check this out... http://cli.gs/freediapers

  • netSpend: The Story of the Visa Debit Card We Did Not Apply For   16 years 4 weeks ago

My deceased sister had a Netspend account. When she was put on Life Support,
being her Power of Attorney, both Medical & other) asked them to Close Her Account
until further notice, since her purse was lost in transit between hospitalizations.
THEY DID NOT !. When she passed (May 2010), I called again to have them make
any funds payable to the Funeral Home, since she had NO LIFE INSURANCE. They gave
me a list of of paperwork to fax them, including notarized power of attorney, death
certificate, notarized photo ID of power of attorney, and who to make the check
payable to. I faxed 9 PAGES to them including the Newspaper Obituary. They said a
check would be sent within 20 Business days. After 20 days, I phoned and they had NO RECORD or the info I sent them, so I REFAXED the info, which is now 10 PAGES. A man phoned and asked me who to make check payable to. When I told him the Funeral Home, he said HE COULDN'T because he is not the Executor of the Estate ! Then he said he would call me back in 15 minutes, which turned into 2 days. After calling NETSPEND countless times, they told me they couldn't talk to me because I was NOT THE CARDHOLDER (someone gigling in the background like this is some joke ! )
I had already faxed info, Social Security Number, Date of Birth & Death of my sister
and all information they asked 30 days ago !! Then this Rudy guy finally called me back and said the CREDIT DEPARTMENT won't let him send the check to ME or THE
FUNERAL HOME, because now I should go to PROBATE or ESTATE COURT, pay $150-
$250 dollars to become Executor of my sister's estate !! THEY NEVER TOLD ME THIS
INITIALLLY IN THE 10 OR MORE TIMES I SPENT TALKING TO THEM !!!! They are
dragging their feet about a little $1,200.00 that my sister owes the funeral home
for her Burial Expenses. I WOULD LIKE TO SEE THIS COMPANY OUT OF BUSINESS or
FINED. Monday, I will call all of the consumer complaint television stations and radio
stations, plus my Congressman, because this is no way to treat a GRIEVING FAMILY.
Meanwhile, I just received an additional bill from the Funeral Home, because her funeral
was a month ago, and there is still an outstanding balance !!!!
    Signed,
    FED UP
