I work exercise into my day by doing 20 minutes on my exercise bike in the morning and after lunch I do another 30 minutes of walking. I have to force myself to get up and go though!
I would just like to comment on #8. If your parents do have money, they may outlive you or you will already be in retirement limping along before the money comes to you.
Having very little money to invest is not really an excuse as you quite rightly point out. The fact is unless you invest as early as possible it will only make life more difficult as you reach retirement age
There are numerous examples of people who have failed to invest the most opportune time only to find that they are in increasing poverty in the future.
I do also think that it can be such a complex area that for some of the perceived difficulties in investing put them off. However at that point it is crucial to get professional help and advice.
I absolutely love peer-to-peer lending organisations. Since the banking crisis of 2008 it is my view that peer-to-peer lending has increased the numbers of people signing up to it
There seems to be a misttrust of traditional banking institutions. As such peer-to-peer lending providers offer individuals the opportunity to see exactly who their investment is going to.
As a peer to peer lender myself to i get excited about seeing my daily return on investment which is considerably higher than traditional lenders. Currently I'm getting a return of around 7% compared with just 3% if I were to invest with a well-known lender.
Peer to peer to clear lending is definitely the way forward!
It's true that she moved in with her boyfriend and split living expenses, which made a huge difference in her budget. But, he wasn't paying her bills, he was splitting them with her, the same as any roommate would. This is a cost savings strategy that can be used by anyone, no matter their relationship status.
I just wanted to add my two cents. Technically the author may be correct, but in a practical sense, somtimes it just works better to dine out. We have a local Pizza place here that has a special on a large Pepperoni Pizza for $5 bucks that's really good. No way can I duplicate that or even want to try. Also it's not the expense of breakfast items that make it better to go out, it's the fuss and dirty pots and pans. I can even get a big breakfast with scrambled eggs, hash browns, pancakes, grits and bacon, coffee & juice for the $5-$8 bucks you mentioned, which may be a lot more than the cost of ingredients, but it's also a lot more trouble and all those dirty dishes to do at home. Plus breakfast out can be a great social opportunity with friends or family on the weekends.
Nice article Tim! I think #3 and #6 bother me the most when I hear them. There is actually beauty in getting a 401k at an employer and then leaving the company. Because then you can roll it into an IRA and manage the money however you want (not limited to the funds available in the 401k).
I've heard people cutting their grocery bills quite a bit by going vegetarian or vegan, and I've noticed my food bill is always higher when I buy meats or fish. I'm halfway in between, sometimes I get my protein from animals and sometimes from dairy or plants.
A great list. For those who don't go out to job every morning, I'd add one more. I work at home and can sit down to the computer in my jammies or some baggy sweat pants and my husband's old t-shirt. I've done it many times. But now my morning routine starts with getting fully dressed and putting on a little makeup. I've also discovered I look better in tints (colors with a soft dusty look) and I stick to those for all my clothes, no matter what.
Excellent article. I think as adults we underestimate how critical play is in developing children's concepts of money management. Teaching children early how to manage money is fundamental.
Your comments about thinking outside of the box are very key to problem solving money management issues in the future as an adult. :)
Not comparing yourself and dressing up for yourself are two huge ways that make a difference in how you feel. It's amazing what a little makeup and a nice outfit can do to your attitude and energy!
Getting a new credit card to consolidate debt is a great one. With so many credit cards that offer 0% interest on balance transfers for up to 18 months, it's great to consolidate debts and give yourself more time to pay off the debt without paying any interest charges.
Get over yourself. It's still fresh bread. Just because you didn't grow the grains in your backyard, harvest it, mill it, and bake it yourself doesn't mean it's not bread. It's not Easy Cheese, it's mass produced bread. Your clothing is mass produced if you buy it from a store, does that make it not real clothing?
Its a no brainer when you have someone helping you it's much easier. I think the title of the story should be "How One College Graduate Paid Off $28,000 in Three Years on a $30K Salary after moving in with her boyfriend."
I was able to pay off a large car loan when I was living with my GF. Now, paying a mortgage by myself, there is no way I could afford the same car. The number one reason was because I had help. A lot of people aren't so fortunate so I think this article is a bit shallow as it misses the mark of helping someone without anyone else helping and using what they have, as the title implies.
I saw firsthand who was making money and who wasn't, what worked and what didn't, what people wanted that wasn't available and what was to easy to find but wasn't wanted.
Anytime you are considering changing your landscape, you must also thing
about the structures that already stand on your property.
Knowing how to time your purchases at the right time can save you a lot of money.
Thanks for an excellent round up. I've just been reading the "10 Tiny Time Management Tips" which was an especially good post. Hope to see some more round up's in a similar theme to this one. Thanks again loads :)

Unfortunately, several of these foods have to be restricted for people like me on chronic kidney disease diets.
I like your style Ken!

Can this be used in the winter or fall when the weather is colder?

turn on the heat, freeze juice boxes for lunches, take shower, get kids up and check my email while the oldest are in the bathroom

In our house, the temperature never got turned above 69 in winter ... it's an adjustment anyone can make, and you won't die .... I'm living proof!
Oil pull, Makeup, Brush Teeth, Put Clothes On, Leave.

I just stick to the same routine everyday. From that I know what possible to accomplish in a day.
