  • 5 Surprising Ways Your Dog Can Save You Money   12 years 9 weeks ago

#3. As a professional dog trainer and handler, I must take issue with #3. It is clear you have never owned a "guard dog" as you call it. You should never, ever have a dog that "even you are a little afraid of." That is ridiculous.

PLEASE, do not get any dog without learning from a professional how to train your dog. If you aren't willing or able to do this, for your own sake, the sake of your family and friends, and mostly, for the sake of the dog, DO NOT GET ONE!

Since this column is about saving money, I'll point out that the liability issues of having a dog you are afraid of is massive.

I hope no one will use this ill-informed and poorly-researched point to get a dog, thinking they'll have a tax break.

  • Top 6 Reasons Why Using Cash-Only Rocks   12 years 9 weeks ago

I am always amazed by people who want to justify using credit cards and talk about the credit score they think is so important, get real! a credit score is nothing more than a rating of your ability and your will to repay debt. You would actually be better off not to have a credit score, WHY? Because this means that you always pay cash, you own whatever you buy and you are not in debt! I started to use a "cash only" mind set 40 years ago and it has been the best decision I ever made. I retired years earlier than any of my co-workers, have everything I own paid for and never worry about money or debt. I save up for things I want to buy, I actually saved and purchased my house with cash. NO MORGAGE, think what I saved in fees and intrest, something you will never have with a bank loan or credit. I save more using cash for larger purchases than any incentives from any credit card company could ever offer. think of it this way, if you want advice on losing weight don't talk to a fat person about it! The same is for money, want to get out of debt? Don't get advice from people in debt. Just my 23 cents worth. (adjusted for inflation)

  • Capital One 360: A Competitive Banking Option   12 years 9 weeks ago

I've been an ING customer since 2007. I loved them. My money was available quickly. If I made a transfer from a linked account I got the money faster and there were no overdraft fees. ( That's the main reason I chose them) Since they moved to Capital one 1st they told me they would just charge me interest on anything overdrafted now they've changed it to were I get emails saying a payment was processed due to NSF and they threaten to close down my account. I've been with ING for 7 years and never had an issue with threatening to close my account. If the funds weren't there they didn't pay it and never once complianed.

Then they told me if they did close it I'd have to wait 2 weeks to receive my money!!! They havent' closed it yet, but I have moved my direct deposit paychecks to a prepaid card while I find a new bank. I am going to look into this Ally. I've heard of them but never tried them. I am also looking for a local bank.

1 more thing, I transferred funds from a linked account Sunday. The funds won't be available until Weds. Now if I am trying to stop something from overdrawing... how is this helpful. At a regular bank as long as the money is deposited by 3pm on Monday, the funds will be available on Tues to clear checks. Why does Capital One keep it another day? I've never had a bounced payroll or deposit with them ever...

The website is horrible. Can't use the version of IE am running.

  • 5 Surprising Ways Your Dog Can Save You Money   12 years 9 weeks ago

We just recently got our first dog, Oscar, from a no-kill shelter, and a way we are saving money with him in our family is we have been eating out less and doing fewer things that keep us away from home (movies, long shopping trips). We find that we want to spend more time at home with our furry friend than doing things away from him which, consequently, waste dollars.

Also, I have to say, the non-monetary benefits of owning a dog are immeasurable. That's not what this post is about, but it's not for nothing. We love our little guy to pieces and he brings so much joy to our lives!

  • Can I Eat This? A Quick Guide to Expiration Dates and Food Safety   12 years 9 weeks ago

An old friend of mine was an FDA or USDA (it's been over 10 years since I last spoke to her I can't remember which she was anymore, but anyhow she was a food inspector), and she told me that a lot of those dates didn't really amount to much especially where dairy was concerned. She used both butter and yogurts well after expiration date (yogurt she used up to and beyond a year past date, for herself and her family) as her husband lived to be 86 years old, and they were married for over 40 years, I think one can safely say it didn't kill them. She just said with the yogurt that the blended became more fruit on the bottom. I personally have used yogurt well past expiration, but just stir vigorously when I use it.

  • Cheap Passport Pictures (Part Two): Online Ordering   12 years 10 weeks ago

I used idphoto4you.com and ordered prints for both the US Passport size and the size below that since those looked alittle big. Both were rejected as the wrong size, which they were (I measured when I got home). I will try another service. And yes, in our part of the country it's $10-$15 for 2 pictures even at drug stores and I need passports for a whole family (5 kids). So I am definitely going to keep trying! Thanks :)

  • Opportunity Costs and Conscious Spending: How Spending $1 Today Can Cost You $10 Tomorrow   12 years 10 weeks ago

Great post. So many people are blowing money on the here and now instead of building a secure future. Seeing my own parents struggle financially is a good motivator to ensure that I don't end up in the same situation someday. I do think that "spending extravagantly" on certain things is important -- if we're miserable because we've deprived ourselves of everything, chances are we'll burn out and give up. But we can't have it all.

  • Ask the Readers: What Is the Best Lesson You Learned From Your Mom?   12 years 10 weeks ago

My mother was really influenced by the anonymous (sometimes attributed to Ben Franklin) couplet "Count that day lost whose low descending sun/Sees from thy hand no worthy action done." My mother was always doing something productive. From her I learned that I can goof off for a while, but no day should be entirely "wasted." Even after a day at the beach on vacation, I throw in a load of laundry.

  • 8 Vile Craigslist Scams to Watch Out For   12 years 10 weeks ago

I have recently been looking for cars. Every person I have come in contact with is mysteriously in a different location than which they posted the ad in. I have now received the same exact story from 2 people and very similar stories from others. They are either in the military or some family member has died. I almost fell for the first one, but when things didn't add up I was able to get out of the scam. Do NOT fall for it. These people are very smart and convincing. Can't trust anyone now days. I now know that meeting in a safe public place is the way to go, and to never send money via internet. Please be aware and smart while using craigslist!

  • 11 Freedoms You Gain by Spending Less   12 years 10 weeks ago

Spending less forces me to be content with what I have and make the most of it. So I get much more enjoyment out of life and get the good out of what I already have. I think contentment is highly underrated, especially in our culture!

  • Are YOU on This List of Cushiest Retirement Jobs?   12 years 10 weeks ago

As an air traffic controller I take exception to the picture of a ramp worker included with your article. The rampers (the guy holding the orange wands) do a great job on a daily basis but are not considered air traffic controllers. My colleagues and I work tirelessly 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year separating moving airplanes from each other and getting each passenger to their destination as safely and quickly as possible. We use a variety of tools including radars, windows, long and short range radios, and math to keep airplanes a prescribe distance apart. Due to these unique demands and qualifications, studies show that the abilities to be effective at this job deteriorates with age. When we are hired we sign an agreement stating that we can only work until a maximum age of 56, the age at which those abilities rapidly diminish. Because of this and the stressors with the job, accelerated retirement benefits are offered.

  • How to Avoid (and Treat) Cold Sores   12 years 10 weeks ago

This virus as with most thrive in highly acidic environments. The human bodies pH fluctuates over time in response to what you're consuming, environmental factors and emotional factors. When your body is in a raised pH state your immune system finds it far more difficult to create antibodies which will fight off viruses and bacteria which it is normally able to keep a handle on.

Treatments such as lysine, zovirax and the like are treating the symptom and not the cause. Your body is essentially a walking, breathing, loving feeling pharmacy capable of producing a cornucopia of drugs on the fly. What we need to do to help it along is ensure that the state in which it produces those drugs is is efficient and effective. So how do we do that?

First and foremost, keep your overall body pH levels in a neutral state. This is when your bodies factory runs at peak efficiency. Too alkaline or too acidic are both just as noxious as the other. Consuming foods and choosing a lifestyle which assists with pH neutrality is the challenge. Putting drugs into your body is only compensating for your body being in a poor state to produce it's own fighting forces. I'll suggest a few things which can help with this process.

    Step 1. Sugar
However much sugar you are consuming immediately halve it. No more coke, no more chocolate, one sugar in your coffee and tea (if you must). Take a moment to check what's in your foods. Of course you still need sugars, but your body can get that from a lot of places. Adding to it will only worse the problem. Sugar when it's processed by your body elevates your acidity levels and those little viruses and bacterium have a field day.

    Step 2. Activated charcoal
No I am not suggesting you burn your food or literally start ingesting lumps of coal. Activated charcoal tablets is excellent for entering your stomach and adsorbing harmful things. One downside is that it can also adsorb good things so try not to take it in close proximity to prescription medicines. There are many other things you can consume to actively balance your pH levels but I will leave you to google those on your own.

    Step 3. Stress releif
GGive yourself a break. Mentally and physically. You body reacts to stress the same way it has for tens of thousands of years. It increases acidity levels in that list. So take a moment to relax, unwind and purge the negative forces in your life. You can achieve this by exercising, meditating, listening to music you enjoy, getting quality sleep in a routine, and taking a moment to enjoy life. Do things which lend themselves to relaxation and calm.

That's all I've got. Topical medications are great for treating the symptoms but they're not preventative. Help your body help you. After all you are your body and your body is you. Stop treating it like it's some separate alien thing you're fighting a daily battle with.
